“If we are to rely on administrative data solely, we think that will be to the detriment of capture and data statistics for Māori and New Zealand.” - Rahui Papa, Chairperson of the Data ILG and Te Kāhui Raraunga.

Rahui Papa alongside Kirikowhai Mikaere, Lead Technician for the Data ILG and Te Kāhui Raraunga, recently urged the Justice Select Committee to not allow the Census Amendment Bill to proceed before meeting several conditions, to ensure equitable outcomes for iwi Māori.

Te Pā Tūwatawata - the world’s first Māori-owned digital data network. Built by us, for us.

Te Kāhui Raraunga has taken a significant step toward achieving Māori data sovereignty with the launch of Te Pā Tūwatawata, a decentralised, iwi-designed, Māori-owned data storage network.

Taking its name from the Pā Tūwatawata - a place of strength and security, positioned strategically within the rohe to defend and provide for those within its confines - Te Pā Tūwatawata was created in response to iwi Māori calling for sovereignty over their data.

Following a successful pilot phase, Te Pā Tūwatawata is now ready to deliver storage and repository services nationally and, in time, internationally.

Te Pā Tūwatawata is on-boarding an initial wave of customers and will be available to discuss the needs of other marae, hapū, iwi or organisations who wish to store their data within the protections of this Pā.

Hāpaitia te ara tika, pūmau ai te rangatiratanga mō ngā uri whakatipu.
Foster the pathway of knowledge to strength, independence and growth for future generations.

Five apprentices from across the motu have stepped up to build Māori led data capability and strengthen Māori data futures through our iwi-Māori data apprenticeship programme – He Ara Pūkeko.

The apprentices will embark on a five-month learning journey to grow their iwi-Māori data capability by strengthening their technical data skills alongside the application of mātauranga Māori and the ability to exercise tirohanga Māori in data contexts.

Two of our new apprentices shared what motivated them to apply the programme.

Tamar Fitzgerald (Tūhourangi), a Data and Systems Co-ordinator, was drawn to He Ara Pūkeko because of its te ao Māori approach to data.

“Working with data is what drew me to He Ara Pūkeko, but it was the kaupapa Māori that grabbed me.”

Fellow Pūkeko, Janie Ale, (Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Awa, Ngāti Whātua, Ngai Te Rangi), is going into the programme with the aim of giving back to her hāpori through data education.

“When we nurture our data, and it’s in the right hands, we can expand and revitalise who we are as Māori and reclaim that in a way that’s really positive.”

Ngā mihi o te wā e te whānau!

Our Rotorua and Pōneke tari will be closed from 22 December 2025 –11 January 2026.

We hope everyone is able to spend some quality time with whānau and friends during this holiday season. If you’re travelling, haere tū atu, hoki tū mai.

The wānanga thrives when our tamariki see data everywhere. Not trapped in numbers, but alive in everything.

Kia ū tonu mai e te whānau - He Wānanga Muka is happening next week - arā, ka p**a anō ngā hua o te wānanga!
