Reminder - basketball 🏀 tomorrow morning ☀️

This term we have absolutely loved taking our basketball sessions to the Sportsdrome with 𝐂𝐥𝐮𝐛 𝟒𝟓! 🏀 A big thank you to New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) for funding our basketball court hire—your support makes experiences like this possible for our ākonga.

Basketball continues to be a hugely popular activity, and it’s been awesome to see our ākonga so engaged, active, and having fun!

𝐇𝐚𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐚 𝐭𝐨 𝐑𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐢𝐭𝐢

We started our haerenga stopping in at Te Rākau Tipua a Hinehopu (the Wishing Tree), where we shared kōrero about who she was, the significance of the tree, meeting and marrying Pikiao II, and some of the other pūrākau. We linked Hinehopu and Pikiao through to their children, whose names are now local hapū and marae names.

We then set off to the other side closest to the lake, by the skids, where we had a kōrero about the name of Hongi’s Track and the history of 1823, when Hongi Hika invaded Te Arawa, dragging waka over the hills and through the lakes to get to Mokoia Island.

From there we headed into the ngahere and walked through Te Ara o Hinehopu, stopping to try some perei (tree asparagus). The tāne all had different ideas about what it tasted like... some saying peas, lemon, even grapes 😂

We sat in the middle of the bush for a bit, listening and trying to identify the different bird songs we could hear, before carrying on with our hīkoi out to the van.

On the way back to Te Aratu, we stopped near Tauria Marae at the urupā so one of our tāne could spend some time visiting his father.

Good day had by all. Plenty of kōrero, pūrākau, laughs and learning along the way 👌🏽

Such fun! Adventure, treasure hunt and taking in the beautiful surroundings at the lake....lets not forget some silly faces!

Participants had a great time this afternoon with Merv at indoor bowls!

It was a competitive but super fun session.

Everyone played well and gave each other tips to improve their skills.

All players won at least one game! 🏅

These Ākonga enjoyed a beautiful cultural hikoi today while
Te Ra was shining ☀️

The destination was suggested by Hoani who wanted to go to the Rotorua Lakefront to look at the historic Te Arawa Waka Taua (war canoe)
that is inside a glass and steel shelter called
Te Whare Waka o Te Arawa.

We followed Carla towards the Wai Ariki Hot Springs to admire the set of six beautifully hand-carved tekoteko (human-like figures) representing the six koromātua (chiefs/ancestors) of Ngāti Whakaue.
Together, these pou whenua (carved wooden posts) stand 2 metres tall to instill a spiritual layer of protection, guardianship, and cultural welcome (manaakitanga) over the land and its visitors.

The six koromātua (chiefs and warriors) of Ngāti Whakaue represented by the carvings out front are
Te Roro-o-te-rangi, Tūnōhopū, Tāeotū, Pūkākī, Te Rangiiwaho, and Hurungaterangi.

Ākonga and their Kaiako felt grounded and a sense of belonging on this hikoi.
