Silverstream Kindergarten

Silverstream Kindergarten High Quality Early Childhood Education We have a spacious and vibrant building with a large outdoor area with established trees.

We are committed to providing a warm welcoming, environment for all children and their whānau. We are the largest kindergarten in Upper Hutt, with 60 children attending per day. We operate in a school day model. We pride ourselves in fostering childrens agency and regardless of the weather we are outside developing working theories within the world around us. We hold a termly event that all whānau

are invited to, so that relationships are developed and strengthened. Our fifth birthday celebrations are a rite of passage and include traditions like “the big jump to school” and wearing a korowai/cloak. Silverstream was the first kindergarten in the Upper Hutt area and we have a strong sense of community. We are near Silverstream Village and benefit from the amenities including proximity to both train and bus routes. We have a close relationship with both local schools, Silverstream and Pinehaven, and a strong transition to school process. We encourage children to learn through play, to explore different experiences and to develop social skills within a warm caring environment. Our teachers work with the children, listening to them, extending their thinking and supporting them to work with each other. Our programme grows from children’s interests. We make sure each child has the opportunity to follow their interests in a supported way during the day.

Kia ora whānau,
Last week, in preparation for Anzac Day, we filled our days with meaningful activities. We decorated poppies and learned about their significance, helping tamariki understand why they are such an important symbol of remembrance. Some of our tamariki also visited the supermarket to gather ingredients, and together we baked Anzac biscuits back at kindy.
Anzac Day is a special time for us to remember and honour those who came before us! ❤️🖤

Whānaungatanga (relationships) is a huge part of our philosophy here at Silverstream Kindergarten. We emphasize the importance of building relationships with tamariki, kaiako and the wider community. Last week, we had the privledge of hosting the 8th Count who included our tamariki in music and movement. We welcomed new friends to our kindergarten and farewelled some of our big 5 year olds whom are about to embark on their journey to kura.
Frankie's pet bunny also came along to meet everyone and tamariki loved the experience of feeding and holding 'Hoppers'. This was a great oppotunity to care for an animal with respect and kindess, where we practiced our turn taking and paitence.

Last night we had our annual wheel-a-thon fundraiser, held at Pinehaven School. Tamariki have been practising for this event and all their hard work paid off!

It was a very successful event and we want to thank those who made this special night happen. We would like to thank Mrs Whiteman for allowing us use of the bike track at Pinehaven School and to New World Silverstream for the donation of a voucher. We would also like to thank Whānau and everyone who came along to support us and of course to our amazing tamariki!

Yesterday tamariki had a fantastic time at our water day 💦!
We had sprinklers, tunnels and splash pads set up around the outdoor environment and it was the perfect day to cool off!
An aspect of our kindergarten philosophy - whakatoi, highlights having fun and enjoying humor with one another, and our water day encouraged everyone to fully immersed. It was delightful hearing everyone having such fun together.

Today, we celebrated Chinese New Year together. Tamariki learned to make Chinese lanterns, did colouring pages and learned how to say Happy New Year in Chinese (Xin Nian Kuai Le!).

Through this celebration, we saw our philosophy of Tinihanga in action. Tamariki are learning through exploration and creativity. This experience also strengthened Whanaungatanga as we came together to share our knowledge, learn and understand different traditions. 🧧

Our tamariki are exploring science through hands-on play and discovery.
We are experimenting with ice, water, baking soda, vinegar and dye. Tamarki were observing the changes and asking questions which is guided by Silverstream Kindergarten philosophy of Tinihanga - curiosity and learning through experimentation.

Our tamariki have made slime by mixing colours and and textures. Tamariki strengthened their fine motor skills and communication.

Our tamariki love to make volcanoes in the sandpit. They are leaning about cause and effect by mixing different ingredients together creating a simulation of an active volcano.
