Stratford District Council - Te Kaunihera ā Rohe o Whakaahurangi Stratford District Council's official page. Stratford district is one of New Zealand’s smallest local authority areas.

Our mission at Stratford District Council is to “Serve the district and its communities through advocacy, promotion, services, facilities and positive leadership.”

Council looks after a wide range of the district's services such as animal control, planning and resource consents, water services, rubbish and recycling, roads and transport, parking and rates. In addition it helps manage funding and

grants for the community and organises family orientated events for the district's residents to enjoy. The district is a great place to live, work and play with affordable real estate, good schools and easy access to the wider Taranaki region.

Stratford's young people are stepping into work and building bright futures with the help of Stratford's Mayors Taskforce for Jobs Workforce Programme.

In 2025/26, 79 young people were referred to the programme for employment support, and every one of them was assisted in some way. Even better, 51 moved into paid work experience across industries like farming, healthcare, hospitality, manufacturing and IT.

This programme is proof that local connections, practical support, and a community that backs its people can make all the difference.

A big mihi to Sam our Workforce Coordinator who does a great job supporting our young people on their journey.

Update: Manaia Road is open with caution and Pembroke Road is open up until the Mountain Lodge. We aim to have the road open to the Plateau around 11am. Drive safely!

Last week Stratford and South Taranaki District Councils submitted a joint proposal to Government for two unitary councils in Taranaki, through the Head Start pathway for simplifying local government.

The proposal would see South Taranaki and Stratford join together as one unitary council for southern and central Taranaki in Oct 2028, keeping local voice, local decision-making and local control at the heart of any future change.

Community feedback strongly supported this approach, with 94% of South Taranaki survey respondents and 83% of Stratford respondents backing a two-council model for the region.

The proposal now goes to Cabinet, with a decision expected in September. If approved, our Councils will move into a more detailed design phase.

To future-proof Stratford’s water supply, Council committed funds to replacing the approximately 100-year-old raw water delivery line to the Stratford Water Treatment Plant as part of our Long Term Plan 2024-34.

This work includes laying 350m of new pipe and installing a new grit tank. It started in January and is being undertaken in three stages.

While originally planned to be completed in July, delays in equipment supplies and responding to poor weather, has meant we’re tracking a couple months later than anticipated, but we’re now on the home stretch and into the final stage of construction.

What’s a grit tank?
The grit tank provides the first stage of treatment for Stratford’s water supply after it’s drawn from the river. The grit tank allows sand, sediment, and other debris to settle before the water enters the plant for final processing.

Upgrading our grit tank and raw water delivery line ensures safe and reliable drinking water for Stratford for another 100 years, compliance with legislation, and improved monitoring to respond to changing river levels.

We’re excited to be nearing completion on this important project.
