There could be a nasty threat to your yields running amok in your forage crop. Nysius, green peach aphid and springtail are the three main establishment pests that cause considerable damage to establishing forage crops in New Zealand. SIVANTO® prime controls all three. Containing flupyradifurone, the powerful insecticide, SIVANTO prime provides rapid and effective control. Insist on SIVANTO prime from Bayer.

Alion, the safe and reliable pre-emergent herbicide from Bayer Crop Science, is a valuable tool in your w**d control toolbox. Alion delivers long lasting control of grass and broadleaf w**ds in pipfruit and stonefruit orchards and vineyards. When used correctly, Alion can provide up to four months’ control over problematic w**ds like glyphosate-resistant ryegrass and mallow. Alion performance is enhanced when applied to clear swarth, but can be mixed with a knockdown herbicide when seedling w**ds are present. Need more time for other tasks? Insist on Alion from Bayer.

Forage brassica and fodder beet crops represent an important piece of the feed puzzle for farmers during times of feed deficit. Crop pest damage at establishment severely reduces the yield available to livestock. SIVANTO® prime from Bayer Crop Science is the powerful insecticide to control the three key establishment pests of forage brassicas and fodder beet - Nysius, springtail and aphids. In this video the team at Bayer discuss in detail why using SIVANTO prime ensures forage crops reach their potential when they’re needed most.

With pre-emergence herbicides such as Sakura® or Firebird® having only recently been applied to wheat crops, it might seem strange to be thinking about spring grass w**d control. But effective control of grass w**ds, especially ryegrass, requires a follow-up post emergence herbicide to be applied to prevent spring-germinating grass w**ds from becoming established.

This is where Othello® OD steps in. Apply Othello OD in late winter or early spring to wheat* when germinating grass w**ds can be seen to control a range of grass w**ds, especially ryegrass, and help your wheat crops deliver their full yield potential.

With the very dry conditions experienced in Canterbury during this autumn, pre-emergence herbicides could take time to activate. But grass w**ds still germinate. Applying Othello OD can control these grasses before the pre-emergence herbicide kicks in. (*Othello OD should not be applied to durum wheat or barley).

Farmers will be familiar with the many legendary products that Bayer Crop Science has brought to market over the years. Behind these products, providing both never-ending support and expert advice, is another legend that is drawing the curtain on a stellar career.

After 44 eventful years, David Weith is leaving Bayer to focus on other adventures. Arable farmers in particular have benefited from David’s comprehensive and intuitive understanding about how to grow high yielding and profitable crops.

There have been many highlights (the list too long to record here); the standouts being providing the agronomic advice that was a key element in Eric Watson being awarded the Guinness World Record wheat yield (twice!), being awarded the Agronomist of the Year 2024 and being given the Royal Agricultural Society of New Zealand medal by the Methven A&P Society for supporting the Methven wheat competition for 30 years. It’s the least obvious however that defines David’s character – his willingness to go above and beyond for his customers.

David - Bayer Crop Science and the NZ ag sector recognise your massive contribution and salute you for it.

A&P Associations have been central to rural life in Mid Canterbury for generations, with annual shows in Methven, Ashburton, and Mayfield providing opportunities for farmers to showcase produce, compete, and connect.

A key feature is the long-running wheat competition, originally established in Methven to improve crop husbandry and encourage knowledge-sharing among farmers. Celebrating the A & P wheat competitions’ 30th year in 2026, a combined Mid Canterbury A & P wheat competition – bringing together winners from the three districts – will hold its prizegiving at Mayfield on 28 May, marking the 100th anniversary of the Mayfield A&P Show.

The event highlights strong industry support and Bayer Crop Science are particularly thrilled to sponsor the overall feed wheat trophy. The Mayfield prizegiving will celebrate innovation, collaboration, and excellence in wheat production across the region. Bayer also co-sponsors the South Canterbury event, reinforcing its commitment to the arable sector.
