HealthPost Nature Trust Creating a safe, thriving environment in the iconic Wharariki / Farewell Spit area through ecological restoration 🌿 Please join us as the journey continues!

HealthPost Nature Trust was formed in 2017, liaising closely with HealthPost, Department of Conservation (DOC) and Manuwhenua ki Mohua (local iwi), who all share a deep connection with the iconic Wharariki/Farewell Spit area of Golden Bay. Trust Chair Peter Butler has a vision of creating a wondrous nature sanctuary in this unique area. In 2020 with the help of many volunteers and other partners,

the three-hectare predator proof Wharariki Ecosantuary was born. A number of endangered species have successfully been reintroduced, including 50 pakahā (fluttering shearwater) chicks. The Wharariki Ecosanctuary is just the beginning, with our vision continuing outside of this fence as well. Featuring dramatic landscapes which encompass wetland, rainforest, sand dunes and even alpine biodiversity - it's no easy task! Our dedicated coordinators and volunteers are planting and trapping to create a habitat where remnant native species can flourish again. With thanks to DOC, we opened a field station at the base of Farewell Spit - Te Whare Whakatā, meaning "the place of rest". Volunteers renovated the house to support our work and that of others who are conducting ecological research in the area, or needing a base for their educational groups. With thanks to our major sponsor , for their ongoing support.

Takahē are roaming on Onetahua (Farewell Spit) for the first time in around 100 years.

The release of eight birds follows the recent completion of a predator-proof fence across the base of the spit, supported by extensive ongoing predator control from the local community and Pest Free Onetahua, along with support from Manawhenua ki Mohua, and HealthPost Nature Trust.

Removing predators is the start. When they're gone, our native wildlife can thrive.

Magic can happen when mana whenua, community, business, and government work together to protect and conserve our beautiful environment, and flora and fauna.

Thanks to the collaborative efforts of Manawhenua ki Mohua, Pest Free Onetahua, HealthPost Nature Trust, the community, DOC and Farewell Spit Tours, takahē are now roaming at the base of Onetahua | Farewell Spit in Golden Bay.

Eight takahē were released yesterday following the completion of a predator-proof fence stretching across the base of the spit, supported by extensive ongoing predator control work in the area.

A huge congratulations must go to all involved. 👏👏

Great networking with our closest neighbours in sanctuary management - the fabulous team from The Brook Waimārama Sanctuary.

HealthPost Nature Trust and Pest Free Onetahua loved sharing our project with these wonderful people. There was plenty to talk about, and Onetahua turned on its best weather for the occasion ☀️

Fence progress report. Steady transformation to green has been interrupted by the cooler autumn weather. Once it all warms up again we can keep going.
Plus we have a pile of trees going in along the fenceline to speed up the transformation of grass and gorse to forest and beauty.
First planting day this Wednesday. Second June 12th. Come join us!

Cape workbee & tracking tunnels 🌿

A huge thank you to Rob, Julie, and Diane for travelling from Nelson to help with clearing burrow entrances, track maintenance, and plant work around the Cape.

Thanks also to our French volunteer Jade for her work on tracking cards and mousing, and to Richard for servicing traps and trail cameras.

The Cape is looking absolutely fabulous!
Still tracking zero mice inside the fence.🥰🥰
