With the upcoming storm on the way, now’s a good time to make sure you, your whānau, and your animals are prepared and safe 💛🐾

Here are a few simple things you can do now to get ready:

🌧 Have a plan
Make sure everyone in your household knows what to do if you need to evacuate. If it’s safe, take your pets with you — don’t leave them behind if you can avoid it.

🐶 Prepare for your animals
Set up a safe, dry shelter area
Make sure pets and stock can be easily contained
Move livestock to higher ground if flooding is possible

💧 Food & water
If it’s not safe for you to drink, it’s not safe for your animals either.
Have clean water and enough feed ready, especially for vulnerable animals.

🚧 Check your property
Look over fences and gates
Make sure stock can access dry areas
Don’t open gates onto roads

⚠️ After the storm
Keep animals away from flood water — it can be contaminated.
Check them for injuries, as animals often hide pain.

❤️ Most importantly — stay safe
Look after yourself first, then your animals. Reach out for help if you need it.

For additional info and guidance, have a look at the Ministry for Primary Industries’ “Animals affected by flood” resource.

Take care out there everyone, and don’t leave preparations to the last minute. A little planning now can make a big difference later.

⚠️ Karaka Tree Berries – Serious Risk to Dogs

Animal Services would like to remind dog owners about the risk posed by berries from karaka trees, which are highly toxic to dogs. Consumption can be fatal.

Karaka trees are native to New Zealand and are common throughout Auckland, including:
-Parks and reserves
-Street plantings
-Private properties

🐕 The greatest risk period is between summer and autumn, when the berries ripen and fall to the ground, making them easily accessible to dogs.

🌳 How to identify a karaka tree:
-Bright orange berries (up to 4cm long)
-Thick, dark green leaves
-Can grow up to 15 metres tall

🚨 Signs of karaka berry poisoning may include:
-Confusion or disorientation
-Weakness
-Vomiting
-Hind leg paralysis
-Convulsions

⚠️ Symptoms may be delayed by 24–48 hours after ingestion.

If you suspect your dog has eaten karaka berries, contact a veterinarian immediately.

📌 More information and advice on poisonous plants can be found on the New Zealand National Poisons Centre website.

Please stay aware of your surroundings and consider alternative walking routes if karaka trees are present. Sharing this information helps keep our dogs safe 🐾

🎄🐾 Happy Holidays from WBOPDC Animal Services! 🐾🎄

As we head into the holiday season, we want to wish everyone — two-legged and four-legged alike — a safe and happy break! 💛

If you’re heading away or exploring new places with your dog this summer, please remember to:
🐕 Keep them under control and on a lead where required.
🌞 Bring water and take regular breaks.
🚗 Make sure they’re secure in the car during travel.
💩 And of course, always pick up after them!

Let’s keep our communities, beaches, and parks safe and enjoyable for everyone (and every pup) these holidays.

Stay safe, have fun, and we’ll see you and your furry friends in the new year! 🐶💚

Meet Nellie ❤ Nellie is an approximately 3-year-old female mix breed pup with a sweet soul and a shy heart.

In her time with us in the shelter she is learning to trust. She will now willingly lay down, and roll over for a belly rub - which she now knows feels amazing & she loves! ❤

Nellie is a gentle, quiet girl and we are looking for a special, calm home for her with someone that will take their time, be patient with her and show her the world can be a fun place.

Nellie loves treats which makes training easier. She loves to play fetch and please her person. She is thriving on routine, consistent training and affection.

If you think you may be the one who can help further Nellie out of her shell, give her a safe space to help her grow & shine, please get in touch today at https://eservices.westernbay.govt.nz/online-services/new/DogAdoptionEnquiry/step/1
