EXIT COREXIT!!!

I think it's terrible that the BOP Regional Council is stockpiling Corexit for a future oil spill when overseas research is that it is 52 times more toxic when combined with oil. I support an immediate ban pending further research. Several died and thousands became ill as a result of corexit use in the Gulf of Mexico.

See you at the Ban Corexit protest on Mount Maunganui Beach at 10.30am Saturday morning.

The initial use of Corexit as a oil dispersant and now continued stock piling for future use, is outrageous. This chemical is so toxic that its toxicity increases 52 times when combined with oil. I was a Wildlife Responder during Rena, and it’s crazy to use a chemical that increases the risk to people and wildlife.
The University of Waikato is undertaking research into its effect in our cooler seawater, which will take another 18 months to confirm what is already known. As we know, decisions will not be made quickly, so expect 3 years before any formal ban of Corexit.
As a candidate for the Bay of Plenty Regional Council - Western Bay, and if elected, I would support an immediate suspension, until research published, on Corexit future use in the Bay of Plenty. I say, Exit Door for Corexit!

Dominico Zapata is organising a rally against the use of the dispersant stored at the Port of Tauranga due to take place at Mount Maunganui Main Beach this Saturday.

We need "Dedicated Shipping Lanes". The Bay of Plenty Regional Council's jurisdiction extends up to 50 kms offshore. As the Port of Tauranga will continue to increase in ship arrivals, we cannot risk a future careless captain charting his/her own route along our beautiful coastline. "Dedicated Shipping Lanes" mean that the ships have to travel a prescribed seaway, in effect, it is sea traffic control. This will also mean that the ships will have to travel a little slower as they enter the BOP coastal waters along a Dedicated Shipping Lane.
