Variable speed limits are now live at Kaimai School and ACG School 🚸 Coming soon to Tauranga schools too – let’s slow down for tamariki.

Police are urging drivers to take extra care around schools as new variable speed limits are introduced to help keep tamariki safe.

Over the next month, new variable speed school zones will come into force, with signage now operational at two rural schools in the Western Bay of Plenty.

Kaimai School on State Highway 29, and ACG School on Pyes Pa Road, now have variable speed limits in place. Before and after school, the speed limit at these locations is reduced from 100km/h to 60km/h.

Police ask motorists to be aware of the changes and to adjust their speed accordingly. The reduced speed limits will be actively enforced.

Schools in urban areas also have variable speed zones operating before and after school hours, with most limits reducing to 30km/h during these times.

Please take extra care when travelling through school zones and help keep our tamariki safe.

A quick winter prep check today can keep you safe all season long ❄️🚗

Check out these tips from NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi – make sure your lights are working, tyres have good tread, and stay up to date before you travel.

Get ready for winter travel – winter is (technically...) only a month away. There are 3 things to do:

• check your vehicle’s lights
• check your vehicle’s tyres
• follow us if you aren’t already to get updates on state highways before you travel.

This weekend is a great opportunity to do the first 2, and you can do the third one now.

Turn your lights on and get out of your vehicle to check your headlights, brake lights, and position lights (the front and rear lights that come on when you turn on your headlights) are all working. You can check your brake lights yourself by reversing close to a wall and looking for their reflection in your rear-view mirror.

This is also a good time to make sure you don’t have full beam on (it’s illegal to use full beam around other people) and that your fog lights are off (it’s illegal to use them when it’s not foggy or snowing).

Make sure your tyres have plenty of tread – the minimum legal depth is 1.5 millimetres but the more tread you have the safer you’ll be – and that they’re inflated at the pressure recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer.

Finally, follow us if you aren’t already to get updates on state highways and check our pages before you travel.

We’ve already had plenty of bad weather across the country this year and conditions can change even more quickly in winter. Intense periods of weather such as severe rain can make it unsafe to travel. If we have to, we’ll temporarily close state highways for everyone’s safety.

It’s Road Safety Week, and this year’s theme is 'Be a Road Safety Hero' – recognising the everyday people who help keep our roads safe.

Your Road Safety Hero might be a school crossing patrol, a road worker, emergency services staff, or someone who has helped make roads safer in your neighbourhood.

This weekend, we’re lighting up the city yellow to celebrate these heroes and remind everyone to travel safely 💛 Don’t forget to thank your Road Safety Heroes!

Booze maths doesn’t add up

Transport Agency and Police have teamed up to launch a new drink driving campaign for the festive season. It’s a reminder to plan a sober ride home – because ‘booze maths’ isn’t reliable, and you could hit a checkpoint on your way back.

It was a pleasure to host our friends from Golden Sands School and Suzanne Aubert Catholic School at the Pāpāmoa East Interchange earlier this month.

These students have seen progress through the phases of construction and are now experts on how to build a bridge😀.
