Across New Zealand , European settlers wanted to introduce species for farming, hunting and fishing - or for nostalgic reasons. Regional acclimatisation societies formed from the 1860's that lasted almost 130 years. Their activities received government sanction and some financial support. After 1990 acclimatisation societies came together as Fish and Game New Zealand, with 12 regional councils. Their main focus is now on habitat protection work. Here are the Tauranga Acclimatisation Society minutes, from 1898-1988.
