MEET OUR VOLUNTEERS β CAROL PAULIN
π Role: Radio Operator (RO), Duty Officer (DO), ex-President/Board Member and RO Trainer
π Years Volunteering: 10 years
π What inspired you to join Coastguard Tauranga? Being a boatie, we always logged a trip report β and knowing Coastguard had our back made all the difference. Thatβs what inspired me to volunteer as initially a Radio Operator and give that same support to others on the water.
πA memorable rescue? One rescue that has stayed with me happened when I was the Duty Officer on a late-night callout in terrible conditions. Our crew searched for three hours before locating a vessel in serious trouble. Two sailors were brought safely on board, and everyone returned to port safely, although the damaged vessel had to be left behind.
π What does being a Coastguard volunteer mean to you? As a Coastguard radio operator, I am usually the first point of contact for boaties needing to log a trip report, get advice, or assistance. It is a role Iβm proud of and a meaningful way to give back to our community.
π What would you say to someone thinking about volunteering? Iβd encourage anyone to consider becoming a Coastguard volunteer. It is a fantastic organisation, and while being computerβliterate helps, you are fully trained in every part of the role. Everything is done at your pace, with no pressure β simply great people supporting you as you learn.
Thank you Carol for the commitment you bring to your roles and every training session and every volunteer you have supported over the many years.
Carols dedication makes a real difference, and we are fortunate to have her as part of our Team π π₯οΈ π€
