Te Ao Mārama - Tauranga City Libraries consists of four library & community hubs – Tauranga, Greerton, Mount Maunganui, and Pāpāmoa – as well as a Mobile Library. Joining Tauranga City Libraries is free for residents and ratepayers of Tauranga City and Western Bay of Plenty District. We also offer free membership for residents of Rotorua, Whakatane, Taupo, Kawerau and Opotiki Districts. Our purpos

Tauranga Libraries have collections of books, magazines, DVDs, music CDs, newspapers, large print and audio-books, and e-books. Most can be borrowed for free. Some of the latest items have a small charge for borrowing. There are approximately 326,000 items in the collection,

There is internet access at all libraries for a small charge and free Wifi. Events and programmes include
story times for pre-schoolers
holiday programmes and class visits for children and teens
cultural events for adults e.g. Poetry Night, Matariki and Maori Language Week, lunchtime speakers, book launches, Book Clubs. computer classes in the Learning Centre, and more. The Digital Library includes over 20 databases which provide access to the world’s information and e-audio books which can be downloaded. Approximately 1.6 million items are borrowed from the libraries each year. Over 900,000 visits were made to Tauranga libraries during the year, and another 130,000 visits made online. They come to browse, borrow, read, use the internet, find information, study, meet friends, attend an event or learn in a computer skills class. Libraries are no longer quiet places except in study areas. There’s too much going on!

Love art? Love libraries? Love your culture? Be part of developing an art piece for the new Tauranga Library & Community Hub! 🙂

You will be guided through a series of prompts about your aspirations, family, culture, and what Tauranga means to you, and learn how to translate these into art. The art, stories, people, and connections created in this workshop will be used as inspiration for the creation of an art piece for the youth area of the new library.

Come by yourself or with a group of friends. Pop in for a short time or stay all afternoon. Feel free to dress or bring items to the workshop that represent your culture/beliefs/character. 😊

“Nāku te rourou, nāu te rourou, ka ora ai te iwi"

We will have a very special guest joining us at Te Ao Mārama - Greerton Library on Thursday evening.

Song Lam (QSM) will be visiting to share what inspired her to explore te ao Māori and te reo Māori, the connections she has discovered between Māori and Chinese cultures, and how these experiences have shaped her journey of building understanding across communities.

Song Lam is an Auckland-based Chinese New Zealander, researcher of Māori culture, educator, and community leader. Since migrating from Hong Kong in 1990, she has promoted Māori language and culture through seminars, workshops, and Matariki celebrations, while building connections between Chinese and Māori communities and supporting new migrants. She was awarded the Queen's Service Medal in 2006 and recognised as a Local Hero in 2014.

We are buzzing about a couple of upcoming talks which will get you out in the garden this spring 😊

On Tuesday, 8 September, Chris and Silvana from Lakeside Bees, will be joining us to share their knowledge of bees and beekeeping, offer practical insights into getting started, and provide guidance on the best pathways for becoming a successful beekeeper.

Then on Friday, 11 September, Olivia McCord, author of The Floral Dream, will be joining us for a fun and practical workshop about creating a thriving cut-flower garden in your own backyard!

Our new chapter begins very soon!

Tauranga Library’s temporary space at 21 Devonport Road will close for the final time at 4pm on Sunday, 13 September as we begin our move to the new Tauranga Library & Community Hub at 95 Willow Street.

The Council Customer Service Centre will remain open at 21 Devonport Road until 5pm on Friday, 9 October, before also moving to the new site.

For your library fix during the closure period, don’t forget that our neighbourhood libraries at Greerton, Pāpāmoa and Mount Maunganui, along with the Mobile Library, will be open as usual. 🙂

We can’t wait to welcome you into our beautiful new city library from Friday, 16 October!
