The balance between protecting our environment and supporting local people and businesses isn’t complicated when you live it every day.
Primary producers are the base of everything. Without them, we don’t eat and it's as simple as that. Doesn’t matter if you’re vegan or carnivore, it all starts with farmers, growers, and fishers. Nothing else is possible without them.
That’s why regional council rules need to be practical. They should help us do things right by protecting what we love, while still making it possible to put food on the table and keep our communities happy, safe and thriving.
I’ve seen first-hand how the Bay of Plenty lives up to its name. My dad and I would take Michelin-star chefs out on the water here, catch fish sustainably, and cook it right there on the boat.
Those chefs saw what we already know, this region produces the best food in the world, and we’ve got to keep it that way.
We need to protect what we love and build what we need, so the Bay of Plenty stays the Bay of Plenty.
