This week we take the time to reflect on the impact Cyclones Hale and Gabrielle have had on the land of our rohe and the hearts of our people.
Tairāwhiti Fire and Emergency acknowledge what we have lost individually and as a district - infrastructure, homes, livelihoods.
But we also acknowledge the generosity and service of every single brigade and station in our district - our stations became community hubs, doors open to ensure dry, safe spaces with kai and water and our Gisborne Fire Station becoming the base for emergency responders Hato Hone St John and the Police. We mihi to our whānau, the people that allow us the space to go and serve our communities in times of need, and we mihi to our communities themselves who show us time and again how much they appreciate our mahi.
We see the challenges ahead while also taking into account how far we have come and what we have built up using lessons learned. We look forward to the sun rising on a new day, standing proud at the sides of the amazing people that make up Fire and Emergency in the Tairāwhiti District - thank you.
We also acknowledge the one year anniversary of the tragic passing of Muriwai VFFs Craig Stevens and Dave van Zwanenberg in the line of duty; our thoughts are with their whānau today and always.
