Marangairoa is an ancestral land area owned by the Wanoa Family. The land area is approximately 480 square kilometers and the boundary runs from the Waiapu River Mouth near Waiapu Marae, down to Tikitiki Village near Ra'hui Marae, and then back up past Marae'hara near Marae'hara Marae at Poroporo Valley, and back up to the end of
Whakaangiangi Rd near The Wanoa Family Homestead, and connects back up to Awatere River near Marangairoa Marae, and through to Te Araroa Township, near Rongomaitapuhi Marae at the Awatere River Mouth, near Horoera Matahi Marae and past the East Cape Lighthouse, near Waiapu Marae at Waiapu River Mouth in Te Araroa, North East Coast of the North Island. Over the generations, the Tangikaroro stream is the water source behind their 35 hectare hill country land block near The Wanoa Family Homestead on Whakaangiangi Rd, approximately 13km south west of Te Araroa, near Marangairoa A 10 B land block. It is the only significant road around the cape and connects most of the significant settlements and all the important side roads. To access the East Cape Lighthouse take East Coast Rd from Te Araroa. Fuel can be hard to come by on State Highway 35, so if you plan to visit, then fuel up in Opotiki or Gisborne and plan your trip to ensure you don't run empty. There are some general stores located on SH35 that provide basic fuel for a premium price. The stores have limited opening times, and may have run out of fuel all together. Marangairoa Marae is just one of the main land block area that is used for The Wanoa Family and their male line of descent. Marangairoa Marae is located near Te Araroa Rd, next to Awatere River, just down the road from one of the lower Urupa on Marangairoa Rd.
