The members of the Te Aroha Volunteer Fire Brigade are deeply saddened by the passing of Life Honorary Member Jimmy Himiona Whatapuhou.

This morning, members of the brigade attended Jimmy's service to pay their respects and were honoured to form a guard of honour in recognition of his service, commitment, and connection to the brigade.

Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with Jimmy's family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.

Rest easy, Jimmy.

This is what we want to see when we are driving with our lights and sirens on.
Pulling over makes it easy for us to respond to incidents quickly and safely.

Unfortunately, we have responded to a number of calls recently where drivers have ignored our lights and sirens. This can increase our response time and create unnecessary risks for everyone on the road.

When you see or hear an emergency vehicle approaching, please stay calm, indicate if possible, and pull over safely to allow us through. Your actions can make a real difference when every second counts. πŸ‘¨β€πŸš’

πŸ”₯Hot tip: Ashes can take up to 5 days to cool completely! We recommend hot ashes are emptied into a metal bin, water is poured over them and they are left to cool completely for 5 days.

Yesterday Martinborough Volunteer Fire Brigade were called to a water tank on fire! πŸ’§

How can that happen?

The homeowner had some ashes from their fireplace; they had waited a few days for them to cool before disposing of them in their compost bin next to the tank. Unfortunately a few days was not long enough!

πŸ”₯Hot tip: Ashes can take up 5 days to cool completely! We recommend hot ashes are emptied into a metal bin, water is poured over them and they are left to cool completely for 5 days.

A couple of weekends ago, Richard, Jacinda, Danuson, Charlotte and Corey travelled up to Auckland for the annual Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge. Racing up all 1,103 steps with 25kgs of gear. A big thank you to everyone who donated to the team. You helped them raise over $5000 for Blood Cancer NZ.

For those travelling back home today, please take extra care on the roads. Sadly, five people have already lost their lives overnight.

Let's all do our part to keep our roads safe and get everyone home to their loved ones.

A horror night on the roads with three fatal crashes is a sobering reminder for those travelling home today to drive safely.

Five people have lost their lives overnight.

One person died in a crash in Wairakei, one on Waiheke, and tragically, three people were killed in a crash in Waiouru.

That is absolutely gutting.

We are thinking of their families today, while they deal with the awful reality that their lives will never be the same.

This comes after deaths in two earlier crashes this King’s Birthday weekend, bringing the provisional number of deaths to seven.

Police are urging motorists travelling home today after the long weekend to please, take every safety precaution you can.

We say it all the time but we’re going to say it again – there are four main things that contribute to death or serious injury on the roads.

Those are speeding, not using your seatbelt, driving distracted, or driving impaired, including by tiredness.

If you’re getting on the road today, please – buckle up, put your phone away, watch your speed, and if you are at all impaired by alcohol, drugs or tiredness, stop – don’t get behind the wheel.

These things might be the difference between you getting home safely or not.
