Waipā District Council

Waipā District Council This page provides news and information to our community about Waipā District Council. The Waipā District lies at the heart of the Waikato region.

Covering more than 1447km² and including some of New Zealand's most fertile land and water, the district of Waipā is centered on the urban hubs of Te Awamutu, Cambridge, Kihikihi, Pirongia, Ōhaupō and Leamington. We’re at home on the water, with our large hydro lakes used extensively for water sports and recreation including Lake Karāpiro, the home of New Zealand rowing and other water sports. We’

re immensely proud of our farming and rural heritage, and are proud to host National Agricultural Fieldays, the largest annual agricultural exhibition of its kind in New Zealand that attracts visitors from all over world. The major Waipā and Waikato rivers flow though our district, and our smaller peat lakes are considered some of the best examples of their type in the world.

Submissions on the request from Milan Park Stud to rezone nearly 100 hectares of grazing land on the south-eastern side of Leamington for medium-density residential development closed at the end of April.

We received 275 submissions – thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts on the Proposed Private Plan Change 37 (Rider Park Structure Plan). We’re now reviewing each submission as part of the process.

Next, we’ll publish a summary of the key decisions requested by submissions. These will be available for everyone to read on our website.

Mike Pettit Waipā Mayor and Deputy Mayor Jo recently took their 'Walk and Talk' to Carter's Flat in Cambridge, a thriving local area with a unique history.

Ever wondered why it's called Carter's Flat? The name comes from William Kennedy 'King' Carter, who ran a coach service and built his home and stables here in the late 1870s. The land transitioned from farmland in the early 1900s to the bustling industrial hub it is today, home to a variety of local businesses.

During their visit, Mike and Jo connected with the teams at:
▪️Hunting & Fishing
▪️Strength Nation Gym
▪️Wackrows Joinery
▪️Guthrie Bowron
▪️Gibson Funerals
▪️Pet Vets
▪️Mitre10

Their goal? Understand the opportunities or challenges these businesses are facing now.

Looking forward to more conversations across our community!

96% of you are recycling like kings and queens - good job and thanks for making the effort.👏

But there are some items we need to flag. Things like medical waste, animal waste, and building waste are costing ratepayers around $600K a year and end up in landfill.

Recycling is important to us (seriously), and that’s why we’re stepping up our efforts to reduce contamination and make things clearer for everyone.

Quick breakdown: Wrong items in the bin = contaminated truckloads = landfill + safety risks + $$

If your bin keeps getting it wrong, we might have to take it away (don’t make us do that).

Need a quick refresher on what goes in your bin? Link is in the comments below with all the details and tips!
