As the winter sport season is now underway, it's a good time to remind everyone about what it means to represent our school.

Whether you're a player, a coach, or a family member on the sideline, you're part of the Timaru Girls' High School community.

How we carry ourselves. away from the action matters as much as what happens during the game.

Good sportsmanship, respect for opponents, and genuine support for teammates are what set great sporting cultures apart. We ask everyone involved in sport to bring that attitude into every game, every training, and every trip to an away venue.

A big thank you to our students, coaches, and supporters who are already making us proud.

Let's enjoy the season and 'Keep it Positive'

From a school rehearsal room in Timaru to hundreds of thousands of views around the world... What a special moment for Timaru Girls’ High School!

There has been a wonderful buzz around school in the lead-up to The Big Sing, and it was lovely to see the Timaru Herald capture part of our choir’s journey.

Our choir, Te Reo o Ngā Kōhine, has received international attention after their Big Sing performance of Labour by Paris Paloma was shared on TikTok and viewed by more than half a million people. Paris Paloma herself also responded to and shared the performance online.

For Music Teacher and Choir Director Ms Meghan McNally, Big Sing was always about much more than a competition.

“When we began building Te Reo o Ngā Kōhine this year, our goal was never to win awards. We wanted to create a space where young women could sing together, support one another, and experience the joy of making music as a team.”

At the Otago/South Canterbury regional event in Dunedin, the students received two standing ovations. Awards were never the measure of this experience. What mattered most was the courage, commitment, friendship and sense of belonging built along the way.

Ms McNally said watching the students stand on stage and sing with such heart was “a reminder of why music education matters”.

“Beyond the views, likes, and comments, the real success story is the students themselves. They took a chance, sang from the heart, and discovered the power of their collective voice.”

We are incredibly proud of our students, Ms McNally, accompanists, supporting staff, whānau and everyone who helped make this experience possible.

As Ms McNally says, “This is just the beginning for Te Reo o Ngā Kōhine.”

Please join us in congratulating the choir and celebrating the power of music, teamwork and student voice. 💙

A huge thank you to Rachael Comer and the Timaru Herald / Stuff for sharing this special story.
