Guess what arrived today? The Scholastic Book Fair is all set up and we are ready to dive into Book Week. We are hosting our first visiting author tomorrow morning, the wonderfully talented cartoonist, illustrator and writer Toby Morris will be speaking to our tamariki. James Russell will be speaking to our tamariki on Friday 31st October. We have competitions and scavenger hunts to add to the fun.

Check out the Kaurilands eplatform for 24/7 to ebooks and audiobooks. A digital library with thousands of awesome fiction, non-fiction, levelled and decodable readers. The settings wizard allows reader customisation, and it is user friendly for all types of readers. This term we will be supporting our tamariki to branch out from a favourite read by choosing a Kaurilands favourite and offering books to try. For week one we chose the beloved Elephant & Piggie series by Mo Willems and put together a display of books. It was great to see tamariki discovering new books to read and enjoy. On Friday we took 13 of our tamariki to compete at the West Harbour Barfoot & Thompson Book Battle 2025 at the wonderful Te Manawa library. It was an awesome book quiz which our tamariki thoroughly enjoyed. They had 5 required books to read before and answer 7 rounds of 10 questions competing against over 20 teams from schools from Hobsonville and West Auckland. Many thanks to sponsors Barfoot & Thompson Hobsonville & West Harbour and Scholastic New Zealand for supporting reading & literacy in our communities.

Today it was an absolute thrill to take a group of 30 Kaurilands students to the Auckland Writers Festival at the Aotea Centre as part of the Auckland Writers Festival School Programme. We were lucky to hear some amazing writers talk about their books and inspire our young writers and readers with their storytelling and love of books. The writers were Jessica Townsend bestselling author of the Nevermoor series, award winning NZ writer Steph Matuku of the Whetū Toa series and other wonderful books, and the wonderfully entertaining Swedish author & illustrator Anders Sparring & Per Gustavsson of The Pinchers series. Our tamariki had a fantastic day out celebrating writing, reading and books!
