Please see our social media guidelines in our links. The South Waikato lies at the heart of the North Island, stretching east and west of State Highway 1. The district has a strong history in forestry and dairy farming. Three of the district's four main towns are situated along State Highway 1. The largest centre is Tokoroa which is home to around 13,000 people. Further north is Putaruru (4,000 people), Tirau (700 people) and to the east the small Arapuni community with some 400 residents.

Customer Services closed Friday 11 September ๐Ÿ™Œ

All Council Customer Services offices will be closed on Friday 11 September as our teams prepare for the move to the newly refurbished Huihuinga Rau Community Hub & Library on Mannering St, from Monday 14 September ๐Ÿคฉ

-> Our team will still be available by phone on 07 885 0340 for enquiries and assistance.

->Beyond 14 September, the Tokoroa Council Building will remain open for Council meetings and appointments with staff.

-> Our Putฤruru and Tฤซrau offices will return to their normal operating hours from Saturday 12 September.

Tokoroa Library is on the move! ๐ŸŽ‰

From Sunday 6 September, weโ€™ll close our temporary library space at Leith Place as we get ready to move back home on Mannering Street.

Itโ€™s time to say haere rฤ to our temporary space which has taken care of our books and community since November 2024 ๐Ÿ‘‹ We canโ€™t wait to welcome you back on Monday 14 September to the newly refurbished Huihuinga Rau Community Hub & Library! โœจ

Thanks for your patience while we get ready to reopen ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Kia ora Tฤซrau! ๐Ÿ‘ท Footpath works are progressing well along SH1, following the Watermains upgrades which started back in May.

๐Ÿช These much-needed upgrades were required for the aging water system, and some trees were removed due to roots lifting the footpath and causing significant trip hazards.

๐ŸŒณCouncil will work alongside the Tฤซrau Community Board on the new trees once the footpath has been completed.

๐Ÿ™ Thanks again for your patience with all these disruptions โ€“ we expect the pathway upgrades will be completed in about four weeks.

๐ŸšงFrom 9am on Tuesday, 1 September 2026, Arapuni Road across Arapuni Dam will close for approximately 24โ€“36 months while Mercury carries out major repair work on the dam.

We know this closure will have an impact on people travelling through the area, so please take a moment to familiarise yourself with the alternative routes and plan ahead where possible ๐Ÿ™Œ

A temporary detour via Powerhouse Road will be available for light vehicles, including cars, motorcycles, school buses, emergency services and rigid trucks up to 8 metres.

Please allow a little extra time for your journey and take care when travelling through the detour.

H5 bird flu has now been confirmed in three birds in New Zealand, and Biosecurity New Zealand is increasing surveillance in areas where sick or dead birds have been reported.

If you come across sick or dead wild birds, please help by following these simple steps:

๐Ÿฆ† Keep your distance
Stay away from sick or dead wildlife. Do not touch or move the birds.

๐Ÿงผ Keep clean
Wash your hands and clean your shoes and gear after being outdoors.

๐Ÿ“ข Report it
If you see 3 or more sick or dead wild birds together, report it to the Exotic Pest and Disease Hotline:

You can also report online via report.mpi.govt.nz.

When reporting, provide as much detail as you can, including the type of bird, number of sick or dead birds, the location, and any photos or videos.

Thank you for continuing to stay vigilant and help protect Aotearoaโ€™s wildlife.
