Message from the Upper Hutt city council.......

๐ŸŒง๏ธTuesday update โ€“ 6.05am
Good morning, Upper Hutt!
Heavy rain and strong winds are currently forecast to continue across the region today. Conditions remain unpredictable, and the risk of slips, flooding, and surface flooding is still high today.
๐Ÿ‘‰ Avoid unnecessary travel. Stay home if it is safe to do so.
๐Ÿš— If you must travel:
โ€ข drive to the conditions and slow down
โ€ข increase following distances
โ€ข watch for debris, surface flooding, and slips
โ€ข expect delays and possible road closures
โ›” Local road closures and restrictions:
โ€ข One lane is closed at 615 Whitemans Valley Road due to a slip
โ€ข The right lane on Wallaceville Hill Road is closed due to a fallen tree
โ€ข The parking area under the Silverstream Bridge is closed for public safety
๐Ÿซ Check before you go:
โ€ข Check with your childโ€™s school or early childhood centre for closures
โ€ข Check Metlink for public transport disruptions
โ€ข Check with your workplace about alternative arrangements
โ€ข Check NZTA Journey Planner for live updates to state highways disruptions: https://www.journeys.nzta.govt.nz/journey-planner
โš ๏ธ Stay safe:
โ€ข Do not walk, drive, or play in floodwater
โ€ข Stay away from rivers, streams, and bridges
โ€ข Do not attempt to clear slips or debris yourself. These areas can be unstable and dangerous
โ€ข Please continue to report issues to Council and allow trained crews to respond safely
โ€ข Be prepared for possible power outages
โ€ข Keep phones charged and emergency supplies ready
๐Ÿค Look out for one another
โ€ข Check in on neighbours, friends, and whฤnau, especially those who may need extra support, when it is safe to do so
๐Ÿ“ข Council crews are continuing to monitor conditions and responding where needed. We will keep providing updates through the day
Stay safe, Upper Hutt. ๐Ÿ’›

We understand people in our community are concerned about the impact of the Middle East conflict on fuel, and it may be tempting to store extra fuel on your property. Fire and Emergency does not recommend this.
Fuel is a highly flammable substance, and storing large quantities of it comes with serious fire danger.
A fire involving fuel spreads rapidly and releases a lot of heat. Even a small spill can cause a devastating fire that will spread incredibly quickly.
Find further information on the storage of your existing fuel: www.epa.govt.nz/everyday-environment/petrol/

Many of these fires have been in homes with working smoke alarms but they need to be in the right places. A working smoke alarm in the lounge is no good to you if a fire starts from your bedroom heater and your door is closed.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand recommend installing interconnected smoke alarms in all bedrooms, living areas and hallways. This includes caravans and sleepouts. A fire can be un-survivable within three minutes so it is vital we get that early warning from our smoke alarms.

We are looking for new members!
You'll never get as much satisfaction from your spare time as you will helping someone who needs a hand. We do fires, accidents, rescues and medical calls from locals in true need.

We train once a week and turn out to calls when we are available.
We need people who care about other people. Nope you don't even need to have super human strength or Arms the size of the Hulk.
If you live or work in the TRENTHAM area Please flick us a message and call in and see us. We are on Station training every Monday night from 7:00PM.
