Who remembered to pack their brollies? โ˜”

It may be a drizzly and grey Monday morning outside, but there's always a warm and bright place that might just cheer you up a little: your local library!

Our doors at Central and Pinehaven are wide open for you. ๐Ÿค— We have comfy chairs and sofas, perfect for getting lost in a great book or leafing through the newspaper. There is WiFi and plenty of space to take a seat somewhere with one of our Chromebooks. You can borrow a jigsaw and puzzle away the rainy hours... and lots more to explore and do โ€“ all for free!

Hello, classic book lovers โ€“ is that you? ๐Ÿ‘‹

Today we have one of our fantastic teen volunteers, Nic, sharing his review of a story that, no matter whether you read it while still at school or later on in life, really stops you in your tracks and makes you reflect for a good, long time.

Here's what Nic says about "Lord of the Flies" by William Golding:

"This is the absolute classic book. A group of English boys crash-land on an island, with no adults in charge. What starts out as a fun adventure soon turns horrid... as the boys go completely savage!" ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

"The story explores how human nature can quickly turn dark (and murderous), even in our most innocent, the children."

"Personally, I love this book for its keen ability to look deep within what it is to be a human, and for not shying away from asking an incredibly tough question: Do we have actual control over ourselves?"

"If you like peering into the dark corners of human nature, don't mind having a bit of a shock, and most importantly enjoy a good adventure, you will love this book!" โœ…

This Throwback Thursday, we're journeying back to May 1990.

The first photo captures the unveiling of The Central Institute of Technology's (CIT) Mฤori name, Te Whare Wฤnanga o Whirinaki.

Mฤori arts and crafts tutor, Mrs Mere Williams (standing in the front of the left group), had guided the CIT occupational therapy students in weaving the tukutuku panel.

Other guests in the photograph include marae kaumฤtua Nuia Waikari, Bill Jeffries MP, Mฤori liaison tutor Murdoch Pahi, CIT Council Chairman Tom Croft, and Head of Occupational Therapy Katy Austin.

A previous tukutuku panel had been weaved by the students in 1989, and can be seen in the second photograph being admired by the patron of the College of Occupational Therapists, Princess Anne, during her visit to the campus.

Her passion for giving unique life stories the space and appreciation they deserve, and for passing on her incredible amount of knowledge absolutely shone.

Hot off the press โ€“ the lovely Jayme from our Central Services Team, who is the organising powerhouse running this year's Poetry Competition, has just received the anthology booklets with the shortlisted and winning entries.

All will be revealed tomorrow (Friday, 28 August) at the Poetry Awards. It's an open community event, so come join us and spend National Poetry Day celebrating local writing. โค๏ธ

The wonderful Kirstie from our Central Services Team is bringing you a review of "The Second Chance Convenience Store". Here's what she says about this absolute gem of a book:

"This is currently my favourite read of the year! ๐Ÿฅฐ The story follows the lives of the two main characters, Mrs Yeom and Dokgo. Mrs Yeom is a retired teacher turned convenience store owner, despite her children's wishes for her to enjoy her 'golden years'. Dokgo is a homeless man who never loses his kindness or ability to care no matter how others see or treat him."

"Mrs Yeom experiences some of Dokgo's endless kindness when she loses her belongings. Dokgo keeps them safe and returns the items to her. This is the moment that changes both of their lives." ๐ŸŒŸ
