It's a very special Throwback Thursday... today, we're celebrating the 60th anniversary of Upper Hutt becoming a city! πŸŽ‰

On this very day 60 years ago, Upper Hutt was proclaimed a city by Governor-General Sir Bernard Fergusson.

To commemorate the occasion, this booklet was produced, documenting the life of locals at the time, and looking forward to the future ahead. Here are a few pages that cover the schools of Upper Hutt, shopping and business, and a sketch of the proposed Civic Centre – can you spot the Library? πŸ“š

The booklet also lists the programme of events for Proclamation Day:

One of our favourite things is seeing local authors flourish, and showcasing all the incredible writing talent we have right here in Upper Hutt. ❀️

Last Saturday, James Hollingsworth launched his second book, "01-Black: Odyssey on Demand" at Central Library. It was a real treat for the audience to hear about his writing journey and the many moments of imagination, creativity, and inspiration that come together to craft a captivating story.

Hands up if... πŸ‘‹
.. you're waiting impatiently for the next book in a favourite series.. you've ever loved a book series so much you can quote entire scenes word for word.. you've been so impressed by a novel's worldbuilding, dynamic characters and political plotline that you wanted to live in that fictional world

Sounds a bit like you? Well, do we have a treat for you today. πŸ˜‰ The wonderful Louisa from our Central Services Team is bringing you a feature of "This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me" by Ilona Andrews:

"This is no ordinary epic fantasy book. Maggie, our main character, awoke cold and forlorn in a gutter without any special powers to speak of... but fear not, she's no damsel in distress! She can quote all the important scenes of her favourite book series, knows all the characters like they're her best friends – and now she's going to use that encyclopaedic knowledge of Kair Toren to not just survive but thrive."

"Full disclosure: The stakes in this are high and it's genuinely very dark, violent and gory at times. We're thrown right into the power struggles between eight noble families. There are no friendly servants or shining hero to save our Maggie! But that makes the storyline all the more compelling. The author put a lot of thought into what it would be like for a person to suddenly be thrown into a fantasy world. I especially loved how the book was able to strike that tonal balance between serious and funny, between the wonder and enjoyment of exploring a fictional world and the actual demands of survival." πŸ’ͺ

πŸ’– What's to love…
- portal fantasy (main character dropped in her favourite fantasy series)
- found family
- political intrigue
- scheming and twists and drammmmmma
- touch her and die
- slow burn romance
- plot twists galore

"Simply unforgettable and perfectly addictive. You won't be able to put this one down! I think it's an absolute must-read for all lovers of the romantasy genre. You're rewarded with a strong female lead, alluring love interests, characters with emotional depth, amazing worldbuilding, nerve-wracking action, and great humour. I was hooked right from the beginning. There is a reason Ilona Andrews is one of my favourite authors." 😍

Oh, what's that you said? "Where is this month's teen book recommendation?"

🌟 You're in luck! What better way to kick off Youth Week than with a brand new book review from one of our teen vollies?

Here's what the all-around awesome Eli says about "The Ruins of Gorlan" by John Flanagan:

"This is the first book in the Ranger's Apprentice series, a mix of medieval fantasy, action, and adventure. It's filled with witty humour and great sarcasm."

"Set in the kingdom of Araluen, the story follows 15-year-old Will, who was raised in an orphanage with other foster children who lost their families in the war. He dreams of becoming a knight like his father, but because he is small and of short stature, the battle school reject him. Reluctantly, he is recruited by Halt, a mysterious ranger, and goes on to learn all about weaponry, camouflage, stealth, and horse riding." 🐎

"Following an incident at a secret ranger gathering, where an exiled warlord launches an assassination attempt, Will's skills are put to the test. With his mentor Halt and another ranger, they set out to track the perpetrators... all while war is brewing across the kingdom."

"This is a great introduction to the series, showing off the different characters and personalities. I really enjoyed the story and side plots alongside the humour and action! It is perfect for people who enjoyed books like Percy Jackson and Eragon and are keen to branch out to more in-depth fantasy books." πŸ‰

Today, we're throwing it back to one of our own events in 2018 – it's hard to believe almost eight years have passed since this special storytime took place. πŸ•

During the winter school holidays that year, we hosted an eclectic programme of events as part of the Beyond the Page festival. Some four-legged friends joined us to introduce kids to animal safety, and to listen to a paw-some selection of animal-themed stories. 🐾

Bringing kids or grandkids to activities during the school holidays? Tell us about events you'd love to see in our current survey πŸ‘‡
