4 A Better City is an Upper Hutt based charity. We are committed to connecting with community groups, businesses, and individuals with a common purpose, to improve the social, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being of the people of Upper Hutt
Some of the ways we are doing this is by:
Engaging with the community to build

relationships and discover the issues. Equipping people and organisations in Upper Hutt with the tools to become a stronger community. Exploring with those individuals who are interested, how they can improve their social, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being.

We choose to grow regeneratively at Mahinga Kai Urban Farm, because good growing shouldn’t cost the earth. We work with nature, reusing what we have to build healthy soil, reduce waste, keep costs down and grow nutritious food in a more sustainable way.

From composting and reusing organic materials to protecting and enriching our soil, every part of our approach is about creating a healthier garden and future. 💚

Our I Have a Dream Charitable Trust NZ – Upper Hutt programme supports tamariki at Te Kura o Hau Karetu to grow in their learning, explore their interests and believe in their hopes and dreams. 💛
It’s also about creating a safe, welcoming space where tamariki can connect, have fun and simply be kids.
We asked some of our Dreamers what they love most about the programme – and discovered that sometimes, the best moments are the simplest ones: playing outside with friends, having fun and making memories together.

Our urban farm – Mahinga Kai is proud to supply fresh organically grown produce to Naenae Fruit & Vege Co-op and Upper Hutt Fruit & Vege Co-op.

Mahinga Kai Urban Farm is a place of learning, connection, and sustainable gardening. Many of our team members join us on fixed-term contracts, where they have the opportunity to build their gardening skills and learn about regenerative growing practices.

Over the past six months, we've been fortunate to have Sharon as part of our team. Her warmth, knowledge, and willingness to roll up her sleeves and get stuck in have left a lasting impression on both our people and our garden.

Sharon has played an important role in helping Mahinga Kai Urban Farm grow and thrive. From tending the gardens and harvesting fresh vegies for our Food Co-ops to nurturing Weathersfield Certified Organics Ltd and preparing them for sale at California Home & Garden, Mitre 10 MEGA Upper Hutt Mitre 10 MEGA Porirua, Mitre 10 MEGA Petone and Wainuiomata.

Looking for some quick winter wins in your garden? Some vegies thrive in the cold, plant now and be rewarded with a lovely fresh harvest before you know it:

Kale: is a Delicious nutritional addition to your meals with cut and grow again leaves throughout winter that taste even sweeter after frost.

Silverbeet: this hardy vegie has to be one of the easiest to grow, and you can also just take the leaves you need and it will keep on growing throughout winter.

Spinach: thrives in the cold weather and the leaves can be used for salads, smoothies, soups, and cooking.

Radishes: are one of the fastest crops you can grow! In just a couple of weeks you’ll be enjoying crisp, peppery radishes straight from your own garden!
