They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Well…. I don’t remember the disposal of the rovers - but I do very clearly remember these buildings alongside the parade ground at Linton.

After moving from the Army premises at Main Street Palmerston North to Linton Army Camp, these buildings became the residence of C Company 5 Battalion - and then a few years later, D (Massey University) Company too. Those were the days where the Horowhenua and Manawatu catchment could raise two viable companies and enough officers to work across the whole of the battalion.

I wonder how many of the hundreds of ex members of those companies will make it to the reunion?

Tonight I am feel pretty excited.

The last (and first) WWCT Regimental Association Reunion was held during the lockdowns of the pandemic and I and a host of others were unable to attend…. Even those that attended had things cut short with the programme for the Sunday effectively cancelled - with just a few able to participate in the Sunday programme… thank you COVID-19.

So why am I feeling excited. Lots of reasons - but key amongst these is that in just 6 months your Association will hold its second reunion. One where we can all attend and participate without restrictions. This means that as a non New Zealand resident I can be there - finally…. To hang out in a venue that means so much to me - at 5 Battalion HQ in Wanganui - a place I felt at home for over 20 years. A place I met my mates and (generally) had good times.

Today - this is a place I can tell tall stories and see people that meant so much to me over the years - then and now. And our second reunion beckons with all of this as its promise.

Between 23 and 25 February 2024 we will build upon our most recent reunion - hoping to have close to 400 comrades in attendance. Or maybe more.

I can’t think of any place better to be.

Since missing the last event, too many of our brothers and sisters in arms have passed - and I regret having missed the opportunity to reconnect with them. As the years go on this will become even more pronounced.

I am not going to miss this opportunity. Will you? Why would you?

With nearly 600 members on this site, if you intend to come - just reply to this post and say yes…

Hopefully most of you will…. I personally would love to see you again and have a beer or a port with you and hundreds more of our past colleagues.

It’s almost 40 years since this photograph was taken - and will be almost exactly at the time we hold the next reunion…

Who else has photos from this era that they can share?

7 months until the second reunion of the WWCT Regimental Association.

That’s right - Wanganui will be the only place to be between Friday 23 February 2024 and Sunday 25 February 2024.

We will be commencing with drinks on the Friday night at the Garrison Club, reliving a few old memories and preparing for the main event on Saturday night. It will be a great weekend!

There is just one question - did we all just get old, or did we get old and lazy? I guess we will see on 24 Feb 2024…

For those who are not lazy - tickets will go on sale at the end of September and will be just $75 if you are a paid up member, or $85 including $10 membership if you are not.

So are you up for it?

The WWCT Regimental Association will conduct a Reunion for Association members from Friday 23 February to Sunday 25 February 2024.

The Reunion will largely take the same form as our last Reunion held in Wanganui in February 2021 and we are pleased to be able to advise that tickets to the event will be the same cost as in 2021. For existing members of the association this will be $75, for others it will be $85, including $10 membership.

Once again we are delighted to be able to use the old 5th Battalion Headquaters in Maria Place, Wanganui for this event. Many thanks to the NZDF and 5/7 in particular for this.

We will advise how to purchase tickets closer to the event, along with a programme of activity for the weekend. Of course the key activity will be reconnecting with old mates and catching up on things since the last reunion - or even longer for those who could not make it to the last reunion.

We are also calling for expressions of interest from this audience for those who would like to assist with the following:

- Communication of the event and drumming up attendance as a regional representative

- development of merchandise for sale to attendees

- IT support in the ongoing development of our Association web page

- on the ground support for the set up of the venue for the reunion

If you have an interest in helping out in any capacity listed, or where you have a talent that you think might be useful - please send a message via this means or email us at [email protected]

We look forward to working on this together - and to seeing you all in February 2024!
