Quick Notice: Head Lice Check!
Dear Parents and Whānau,
We’ve had a few cases of head lice reported at school recently. Please don’t panic or feel embarrassed - catching lice has absolutely nothing to do with hygiene! Because our 40 students spend so much time in close contact, those little critters easily crawl from one head to another. As a small school, we can get on top of this quickly if we all check tonight.
Here is how we can team up to beat them:
- Check Weekly: Please inspect your child’s hair under a bright light at least once a week. Lice are tiny, brownish-grey insects, and their eggs (nits) are pale and glued near the scalp.
- The Conditioner Trick: The best removal method is wet combing. Coat the hair with conditioner, section it out, and use a fine-toothed metal comb to remove lice and eggs from root to tip. Repeat every 2–3 days until you’ve seen nothing for 10 days.
- Tie it Up & Don't Share: Please send children with long hair to school with it tied back, and remind them not to share hats, brushes, or hair ties.
Blast the Bedding: If you find anything, toss pillowcases, sheets, and soft toys into the dryer on high heat for 30 minutes.
⚠️Important: Chemical treatments are available, but some lice are resistant to them. Never use household chemicals such as fly spray or kerosene, as they are highly dangerous.

Warm regards,
Karen Catchpole
