WINTER CALL-OUT WRAP-UP

It’s been a… dare I say it 🫣 quiet time over the past winter months! (Hopefully we haven’t just jinxed ourselves… 😬)

We’ve still had a variety of call-outs keeping the crew on their toes:
20 July – Road flooding from a burst pipe
27 July – Supported Katikati Fire Brigade at a scrub fire in Aongatete
4 August – Back to Aongatete supporting Katikati Fire Brigade
6 August – Fire alarm activation at Waihi Beach
6 August – St John support at Athenree
12 August – BBQ fire at Tanners Point
21 August – Landing Zone set-up at Bowentown
25 August – Alarm activation at Waihi Beach

A good mix of jobs and a great reminder that being a volunteer firefighter involves a lot more than just putting out fires!

If you’ve ever thought about joining the team, learning some pretty cool new skills and giving something back to your community, come and have a chat.

Give us a bell, or better still, pop down to the Beach Station on a Tuesday night around 6:30pm and meet the crew.

Full training is provided — you just need to bring the commitment and willingness to learn.

You never know… it could be the start of something pretty awesome. 🚒🔥

We understand that sometimes the fire siren is a bit loud and can cause alarm for our residents. For volunteer firefighters, the siren is more than just a loud alarm — it's a call to action.

It helps alert brigade members that an emergency response is needed, often when every minute counts. Whether it's a house fire, vehicle accident, medical emergency, or vegetation fire... a rapid response can make all the difference.

Our volunteer firefighters give their time freely to protect our community, day and night. The siren is one of the most reliable ways to notify responders quickly, particularly in areas where mobile coverage, technology, or pagers may not always be sufficient on their own.

While the sound may be inconvenient for a few moments, it represents something reassuring: local volunteers mobilising to help a neighbour in need.

The next time you hear the siren, remember that someone in our community may be facing one of the worst days of their life — and our volunteer firefighters are answering the call.

I hope everyone is managing to stay warm during this cold snap... reminder to use caution and void hugging the heater or placing items too close. Stay safe and warm... 25 days till Spring!!

A couple of call-outs to keep us busy this week!

Monday 13 July – 4:02pm - Our brigade responded to reports of smoke in the vicinity of Orokawa Bay. After a bit of investigating, it turned out to be a controlled burn at the top of Homunga.

A huge shout-out to Max and Byron from Waihi Beach Surf Lifesaving Club for taking a couple of our crew around to Orokawa Bay by IRB to pinpoint the location of the smoke. Your quick response and assistance took a lot of the guesswork out of the incident for us, thank you for your fantastic support!

Tuesday 14 July – 6:41pm - Our crew was called to assist Waihi Volunteer Fire Brigade with traffic management following a motor vehicle crash on Beach Road.

The best fire is the one that never starts. Take five minutes today to walk through your home and identify potential fire hazards before they become an emergency.

Most house fires don't start with flames – they start with everyday hazards that are easy to overlook.

- Keep anything that can burn at least one metre away from heaters and fireplaces.

- Avoid overloading power boards and electrical outlets. If it looks crowded, it probably is.

- Clean dryer filters after every use.

- Never leave candles burning when you leave a room.

- Keep an eye on cooking at all times – unattended cooking remains one of the leading causes of house fires.

- Use the correct charger for Lithium Ion Battery powered devices.

- Make sure exits are clear and easy to access in an emergency.

- Test your smoke alarms regularly. A working smoke alarm can provide the precious seconds needed to escape safely.

Fire safety isn't just about responding to a fire – it's about preventing one.
A few simple checks now could protect your home, your family, and everything that matters most.

A massive shout-out to our volunteers who keep the Waihi Beach Community Shop running day in and day out. Your time, dedication, and hard work make a real difference to our community, and we are so grateful for everything you do.

Every purchase made helps support three local emergency service organisations: Mayor View Volunteer Fire Brigade, Waihi Beach Coastguard, Waihi Beach Lifeguard Services.
The funds raised through shop sales help these vital organisations continue serving and protecting our community.

A huge thank you also goes to the many members of our community who generously donate goods to the shop. Without your donations, there would be nothing to sell, and this incredible cycle of community support would not be possible.

Together, you are helping make Waihi Beach a stronger, safer, and more connected place to live.

Thank you to every volunteer, donor, and customer who plays a part in this amazing community effort. We appreciate you all!

A few facts around our Fire & Emergency NZ Volunteers:
~ Volunteers make up around 80% of our workforce
~ There are 590 volunteer fire brigades across Aotearoa New Zealand
~ There are more than 11,800 volunteers
~ We respond to roughly 100,500 incidents a year
~ The most northern Brigade is Houhora
~ The most southern Brigade is Oban

So here's to all our volunteers – always ready, always willing, and always there when our community needs them most. Thank you for your dedication, your sacrifice, and your service. Cheers 🥂🍻

We got a little knotty at training on Tuesday night, putting the fall restraint kit through its paces while sharpening our knot-tying, harness, and line-handling skills. A great hands-on session building confidence, competence, and teamwork in an important operational area.
