🔥REMINDER🔥
For ALL of the Wellington District (including Kapiti and the Wairarapa), Fire and Emergency NZ have enforced a total ban on ALL OUTDOOR FIRES AND FIREWORKS - from midday yesterday until 8.00am on Monday, 27 October 2025. People planning outdoor activities over the long weekend should remember that ALL campfires and bonfires are prohibited.
🟠FIREWORKS - We recognise that letting off fireworks as part of Diwali celebrations is significant and we appreciate the community following the ban on fireworks at this time – thank you.
If you see or hear fireworks being used it can be reported via the Police non-emergency line – Call 105. If Fireworks start a fire, call 111 and ask for FIRE.
🟠BURN PILES - Anyone who has had an outdoor fire since the beginning of September is asked to go and check that it is completely out. If you see any sign of heat or smoke, please act immediately to fully wet down the site. If this is not possible, call 111 so that firefighters can assist.
🟠NO POWER - If your power is out, the use of gas BBQs in residential areas as a means of cooking is permitted. BBQs must be used outside away from vegetation on a flat, solid surface and supervised at all times. Do not use outdoor cooking equipment inside.
Phil Soal, Wellington Community Risk Manager, says to ease the load on their firefighters we need the public’s help following this ‘Total Fire and Fireworks Ban’.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand’s Wellington District have enforced a total ban on outdoor fires and fireworks from midday today until 8am on Monday 27 October.
It comes as winds are forecast to exceed 100km/hr in many places, with high temperatures and low humidity creating very high fire risk conditions.
On Tuesday firefighters were stretched across the Wellington region, including the Wairarapa and Kapiti Coast, responding to weather-related callouts.
The prohibition means no new outdoor fires can be lit. People must also check their previous burns for signs of reignition.

Wellington Community Risk Manager Phil Soal says the community can also help by refraining from letting off fireworks as part of Diwali celebrations while the fireworks ban is in place.
"People planning outdoor activities over the long weekend should remember that all campfires and bonfires are also prohibited," he says.
The prohibitions are in addition to the ones in place in Hawke's Bay, Marlborough, Canterbury and Mid-South Canterbury for the same time period.
