Waikanae Volunteer Fire Brigade took on the Sky Tower Challenge 2026, our team of Ben, Max, Steve, Jimmy, Michael and Glynis. With the help of our amazing community, the team raised over $18,000 towards Blood Cancer NZ and collectively, the 1100 firefighters who took part raised over 2.5 million this year climbing 51 floors and 1103 steps, legends all! It was a great experience for the team, training together towards a common goal, organizing fund raising, for which they are incredibly grateful to Waikanae New World, Waikanae Easter Fair, and the Kapiti Food Show for their support. The team was proud to represent Waikanae and our community in raising so much for the ongoing work of Blood Cancer NZ.

Waikanae Volunteer Fire Brigade 🚒 wishes everyone a Happy New Year and hopes everyone had a lovely evening celebrating with family and friends.
We had a busy 2025 with over 230 calls attended.

We want to remind everyone of the importance of celebrating safely and responsibly at the beach.
Last evening, our members responded to Waikanae Beach for several bonfires, including a large bonfire and multiple small fires above the high-tide mark near the dunes.
Brigade members did not want to spoil the celebrations, so we allowed those celebrating to see in the New Year and then arranged to extinguish the larger fire. Most of the young partygoers were well-behaved and respectful.
What was disappointing was that, while waiting to extinguish the larger fire, we took the time to speak with other groups with bonfires to ensure they had a suitable means of extinguishing their fires before departing.
Unfortunately, two groups—including some adults—left their fires unattended by either burying the ashes or spreading them out. This meant the brigade needed to step in to make sure the fires were fully extinguished.
The brigade is always happy to help, but unattended fires can delay our response to other, more serious emergencies. We responded to several other calls overnight.

Let’s all work together to keep the beach safe for everyone.

PLEASE always use water to extinguish any fires on the beach; take a bucket or container to do so, and NEVER bury a fire with sand. Sand traps heat like an oven, keeping embers hot for up to 24 hours. People or animals walking across the sand later can suffer severe burns, which have occurred at this beach previously.

🔥REMINDER🔥
For ALL of the Wellington District (including Kapiti and the Wairarapa), Fire and Emergency NZ have enforced a total ban on ALL OUTDOOR FIRES AND FIREWORKS - from midday yesterday until 8.00am on Monday, 27 October 2025. People planning outdoor activities over the long weekend should remember that ALL campfires and bonfires are prohibited.

🟠FIREWORKS - We recognise that letting off fireworks as part of Diwali celebrations is significant and we appreciate the community following the ban on fireworks at this time – thank you.

If you see or hear fireworks being used it can be reported via the Police non-emergency line – Call 105. If Fireworks start a fire, call 111 and ask for FIRE.

🟠BURN PILES - Anyone who has had an outdoor fire since the beginning of September is asked to go and check that it is completely out. If you see any sign of heat or smoke, please act immediately to fully wet down the site. If this is not possible, call 111 so that firefighters can assist.

🟠NO POWER - If your power is out, the use of gas BBQs in residential areas as a means of cooking is permitted. BBQs must be used outside away from vegetation on a flat, solid surface and supervised at all times. Do not use outdoor cooking equipment inside.

Phil Soal, Wellington Community Risk Manager, says to ease the load on their firefighters we need the public’s help following this ‘Total Fire and Fireworks Ban’.

*********************************************************************
Fire and Emergency New Zealand’s Wellington District have enforced a total ban on outdoor fires and fireworks from midday today until 8am on Monday 27 October.

It comes as winds are forecast to exceed 100km/hr in many places, with high temperatures and low humidity creating very high fire risk conditions.

On Tuesday firefighters were stretched across the Wellington region, including the Wairarapa and Kapiti Coast, responding to weather-related callouts.

The prohibition means no new outdoor fires can be lit. People must also check their previous burns for signs of reignition.

If you see any sign of heat or smoke, please act immediately to fully wet down the site. If this is not possible, call 111 so that firefighters can assist.

Wellington Community Risk Manager Phil Soal says the community can also help by refraining from letting off fireworks as part of Diwali celebrations while the fireworks ban is in place.

"People planning outdoor activities over the long weekend should remember that all campfires and bonfires are also prohibited," he says.

The prohibitions are in addition to the ones in place in Hawke's Bay, Marlborough, Canterbury and Mid-South Canterbury for the same time period.
