Fire and Emergency New Zealand has declared a restricted fire season for North Waikato from 4pm Thursday 19 March until further notice.

During a restricted fire season people wanting to light outdoor fires must apply to Fire and Emergency for a permit and have it approved.

The North Waikato zone includes the Waikato, Hauraki, Matamata Piako, Waipa, Otorohanga and Waitomo territorial authorities.

Announcing the fire season change District Manager Daryl Trim says drier conditions during late summer and early autumn have triggered the change.

“Despite regular rainfall, the fire risk in North Waikato is increasing,” Daryl Trim says.

“We’ve had an increase in the number of vegetation fires including several large fires.

“ While these have been controlled and extinguished, we anticipate future such incidents are likely to become more frequent.

"Having a restricted fire season gives us greater control of who can burn and when, and we can provide direct fire safety advice to those completing burns,” he says.

“A restricted season will reduce the risk to persons and property.”

The Thames-Coromandel District remains in a restricted fire season.

"Go to www.checkitsalright.nz for full details of the fire season status and what activities are restricted or banned."

We’re extremely disappointed to find that the vacant house on Flaxmill Road, used by our Fire Brigade for training, has been badly vandalised.

The damage has left the house unsafe and unusable. Instead of spending our limited time training to respond to emergencies, our volunteers are now forced to clean up and repair the damage, delaying our training.

This vandalism wastes time, resources, and effort that should be going into keeping our community safe. It directly affects our brigade’s ability to stay prepared and ready to respond when needed.

If you have any information or noticed suspicious activity in the area, please contact us.

Our volunteers come from all walks of life, backgrounds and industries. If you live in an area with a volunteer brigade and see the Proud Employer logo in local businesses, you know that business employs and supports our volunteers!

🔎 I spy with my little eye employers proudly supporting our volunteers 🫶

⏰🔋 Daylight Savings = Smoke Alarm Check! 🔋⏰
This weekend when you turn your clocks forward, take a moment to check your smoke alarms too.

1. Check your smoke alarms are working by pressing the button. The end of a broom handle is a great help! 🧹
2. While you’re there give them a little dust, a minute of maintenance could save lives!
3. Check in on elderly whānau or neighbours. Fifty percent of avoidable deaths in house fires are people over the age of 60. This is something we can change.
A little mahi goes a long way.❤
