One of our amazing crew members is about to hit a massive milestone... Murray Ellis is celebrating his 50 years in the Wainuiomata Bush Volunteer Fire Brigade!! YES... read that again... 50 YEARS!!

Separate to the official formal celebration, come along to plant some trees to mark Murray's 50 years of service.

This is a social non-FENZ event, so family and friends & the community are welcome to join (please don't wear your branded FENZ gear). We will be hosted by GWRC who are supplying all the plants and other equipment and will be in charge on the day.

Details:
When: Sunday 9 August 9am - 3pm
Where: Meet at Baring Head Bridge Carpark approx. 1600 Coast Road Wainuiomata
Bring: Gardening gloves if you have them (they will have a supply), lunch and a hot flask, good closed shoes – gum boots or boots are ideal, warm layers and waterproof jacket.

As you know it can be pretty exposed down there so suggested minimum age is 8yo.

We need to let them know how many to expect, so please contact Merewyn at [email protected] to know if you are coming and how many extras by Tuesday.

🔥Do you have any large burns planned?
🔥Or are you planning a large burn such as a burn pile, skid site, forestry slash or any other large burn?

🔥NOW is the time to undertake these fires, with the prediction of a Super El Nino summer approaching.

🔥Please read our information below:

A Super El Nino has been forecast for the approaching summer fire season. It is predicted to exceed all other El Nino events in the past. This means a reduced rainfall for the last half of winter and a much drier and windier summer for the eastern side and northern parts of NZ.

What this means is a far more dangerous and active wildfire season than we have had for a few years. Escaping fires will be very difficult to control so we may need to impose restrictions and prohibition on all outdoor fires somewhat earlier this year. Large burns that will smoulder/burn on for a longer period it will need to be completely extinguished before the fire danger increases too much, so now is the time to undertake these burns. If you cannot burn your large pile now, please consider reducing your pile size and feeding the smaller fire from the larger pile.

Our regular trainings are held on a Thursday night… we have to do a lot of prep just in case disaster strikes.

This past Thursday our team practiced putting out a ‘wildfire’ up at the water reservoir and at the end of Hine Road.

Wow.. what an incredibly scary period over Sunday night & Monday. We’re all glad that one is over… it’s now time for cleaning up.

Our team were happy to respond to help in the Hutt Valley. The crews were sent to Hutt Emergency Management where they were given the jobs they wanted done instead of the normal turn out from FENZ. They were even working with the Swift Water Crews at one point helping evacuate people & pets from their properties along Riverside Drive.

It has been a busy season so far, with four deployments across the North Island before Christmas.

Yesterday six of the team returned from a Whanganui after a week of hard grafting.

Today, a crew of three returned from a fire near Hastings.
