NCO SCH – 3 RTW.

The 3rd JNCO Promotion course marched into 3 RTW on the 11th May. Their first task was to complete an ELDA phase consisting of learning about themselves, their peers and their boundaries -Success.

Now onto the Lead Teams framework where they discover what they do, and what they don’t know about themselves - their style, their weaknesses and their strengths. Our future leaders stretching their knowledge, growing their abilities, and developing skills to perform better under pressure when it counts the most.

Know your Enemy. Know your Environment - KNOW YOURSELF!

NCO SCH

It’s been a productive month in between delivering courses at the Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) School.

Recently a workshop in Waiouru was held where staff from the three wings came together from around the country with the mission of refining and improving the NZ Army NCO leadership courses.

Goals included the realignment of the Regional Training Wings (RTW) to ensure professional standards are maintained across the board and key lessons were learned for the benefit of both the Nth and Sth Island based sub units. This included the development and updating of JNCO marking guides and student lessons, as well as a review of Exercise Young Lion with the aim of balancing functional leadership with a sharp warfighting focus.

The week was capped off on the range with the inaugural (friendly but fiercely competitive) shooting match between the wings. Congratulations to 2RTW for taking the team win and also SGT T WICK for best individual shot!

Excellence breeds excellence!

Exercise TEBAGA GAP

Cadets were tested in leadership, resilience, and tactical thinking under demanding field conditions, including live field firing.

Focused on offensive tasks at section level, previous training and exercises came together under pressure. Long days and tasks demanded teamwork, communication, and coordination.

The live firing reinforced fundamentals, strengthened combat mindset, and further developed controlled aggression under pressure.

The bonds forged at section level now form the foundation for the next phase of training.

Train hard. Fight easy.

NZ Cadet Forces SNCO Parade

Pictures from the NZCF parade, reviewed by the Commandant and RSM.

Conducted in Waiouru during the school holidays, the week challenged the cadets to deliver lessons, execute parade appointments, and lead across a range of scenarios.

Congratulations to all who completed the course, and to those recognised for outstanding performance.

Acknowledgment also to the staff and instructors whose commitment continues to shape our future leaders.

Recognising excellence. Building future leaders.

Exercise LE BASSE VILLE

Ex LBV provided the OCDTs with their first exposure to leadership at Section level. The exercise gave them the opportunity to step forward, take responsibility, make decisions, and lead from the front.

Operating in some challenging conditions at times, they performed strongly, demonstrating resilience, adaptability, and the early foundations of effective leadership.

This marks a significant milestone in their development. The first step in leading soldiers on the ground, and another stride in their journey.

Forged in the field. Ready for what’s next.

SNCO Wing - NCO School

The Regular Force Senior Non‑Commissioned Officers Promotion Course 26/01 graduated in Waiouru recently with a formal ceremony held at Rongomaraeroa o Ngā Hau e Whā, the NZ Army Marae.

Proceedings were opened with a pōwhiri to welcome families, friends and invited guests, recognising the critical role whānau play in supporting soldiers throughout demanding training and service. Bringing families together reinforces that strong support networks are a force multiplier strengthening resilience, performance and leadership across the Army.

The course also included two students on the Mutual Assistance Programme (MAP) — CPL T (Republic of Fiji Military Forces) and SSGT T (Tonga Defence Services) — reinforcing enduring regional partnerships across the Pacific.

Award Recipients
• Top Student: CPL H
• Leadership Award: A/SGT F (RNZIR)
• Regimental Award: A/SGT L (RNZE)
• Peers’ Award: CPL C (RNZAMC)

Thirty two graduates now move forward as confident and capable Senior Non‑Commissioned Officers, ready to safeguard the Profession of Arms, and Lead Leaders!

Anzac Day 2026

Officer Cadets attended Anzac Day commemorations across Taupō, Tūrangi, Raetihi, Ōhakune, and Waiouru.

Standing alongside veterans, whānau, and the wider community, they honoured the service and sacrifice of those who have gone before, reflecting on the legacy they are now preparing to uphold.

“As we stand here today, may we honour the Anzac legacy not only with our silence and our words, but through the way we live, lead, and serve in the years ahead.” — OCDT Migounoff

“To those who have served before us, we remember you. To those who serve today, we honour you. And to those who will serve in the future, we owe it to you to lead well.” — OCDT Sulicich

Lest we forget.

1CSR Command Team Development

The 1st Command Support Regiment (1CSR) command team completed an experiential leadership development activity in the Hauraki Gulf, using sea kayaking as the vehicle to sharpen leadership under pressure.

Across a three day expedition phase, including night navigation and challenging conditions, the team operated in an environment that demanded constant decision making, clear communication, and collective problem solving. Conditions were deliberately designed to surface behaviours, test assumptions, and drive growth.

Development isn’t left to chance. It is peer informed, behaviour based and grounded in real performance under pressure. The outcome is a more aligned, self-aware, and effective command team ready to lead in complex and uncertain environments.

Thanks to the ALC team for another well run activity that delivers where it matters, on people and performance.

Leadership isn’t built in comfort. It’s forged against the tide.
