9 Pellets of Emergency Kai, Water and Hygiene packs were delivered by NZ Defense Force workers. With the aide of incredible Rangitahi from Capital Training and a borrowed Fork Lift + driver from Ruahine Ford Motors, everything was unloaded and squared away. Kei runga noa atu koutou, mo to awhina, manaakitanga, ki a matou I tēnēi ata. Thiei Tamatea!

Ngā Kōmanawa o Tamatea shared their wealth of experience and knowledge of mātauranga with me today as we talked about the impacts of Cyclone Gabrielle, the tohu (signs) that led up to it, and what we should learn from the event. Several of these special kaumatua (elders) were directly affected by flooding of their home and whānau and want to make sure that we learn from it, work more closely with te taiao (the environment) rather than trying to control it (and then being let down when it doesn't work). We also had a great chat about how we need to empower local voices, and our people of the land as we look to recover, reimagine and rebuild. Local solutions and not Central (govt) direction was their kōrero - and how to invest in our local people to bring the skills and manpower required.
