Speak up for the health of the Awa Matakanakana catchment - 14 June 12.30pm at the Matakana School Hall

Join us for the 2nd community workshop to determine the future of Awa Matakanakana catchment.

Hear about the current state of the catchment and the work already underway to help protect high risk areas.

Find out from eDNA testing what rare and endangered critters live in and around our waterways

Start to develop the action plans that will help protect the catchment and build community resilience for the future.

Hear from Steve Hathaway, the founder of Young Ocean Explorers, about the impact of sediment and what’s happening under the water in Kawau Bay and beyond.

Doors of Matakana School will open at 12:30pm for a light lunch and the workshop starts at 1pm. Please register so we get the catering right and to keep you up to date with event details.

Our Year 12 Art students had the privilege of a trip to the Auckland Art Gallery at the beginning of the term. They were able to meet Reuben Patterson, a well known New Zealand artist, who took them through a practical workshop. which was engaging and fun.

AWHI SHED DONATIONS – TEXTILES CHARITY PROJECT

Each year, the Mahurangi College Textiles Department partners with Awhi Shed, a West Auckland organisation that supports people experiencing hardship, including those facing homelessness and families fleeing domestic abuse and violence. Awhi Shed provides clothing, food, household items and practical support to vulnerable members of the community.

This year, alongside the clothing our students have made, we are also collecting donations to help support families and individuals over winter.

We would greatly appreciate any donations such as:
- canned food / pantry items
- baked goods (deadline is Monday 29th June)
- blankets or linens
- toiletries
- warm clothing or winter essentials
Please drop all donations to: Abbie Thalari – T4
Deadline: Monday 29 June (to allow for sorting and pack preparation on Tuesday morning)

Thank you for supporting this incredibly worthwhile kaupapa and helping our students see how their skills and efforts can positively impact others in our community.

Year 8 - Art
For the Kiatiakitanga project this year some of our Year 8 students have been able to learn the meanings behind kōwhaiwhai and have created their own patterns. They developed their pattern making skills into some stunning bird prints and drawings.

On Friday, under perfect conditions, we held our annual school Cross Country Championships. Using the same course introduced last year, students raced across school sports fields, farm land, gravel driveways, netball courts, riverside paths, and public footpaths along the challenging 2.4km course.

Participation was outstanding in the compulsory Year 7-10 races, and a large contingent of senior students took part in the optional two-lap event during period 5. Congratulations to all race winners, and well done to every student who stepped up to the challenge and completed the course.

A huge thank you to our property team for preparing the track, our sports staff, sports prefects and council members led by Mary Ingham, and our teachers and L2PE1 students for their support, encouragement, and organisation throughout the day.
