Writing her way home.

Dr Madi Williams never expected writing her iwi's history would also reconnect her with her own whakapapa.

Recognised as one of this year's New Voices of Aotearoa, Madi shares how a decade of research became a personal journey of belonging, identity and finding her place.

My Mum.

That's the simple answer Dr Atakohu Middleton gives when asked what first inspired her to become a writer.

Recognised as one of this year's New Voices of Aotearoa, Dr Atakohu Middleton shares how her mum inspired a lifelong love of storytelling and why she's creating more books for adults on the journey of learning te reo Māori.

Some of the most valuable learning happens through relationships.

For emerging artist Tui Hirabayashi, working alongside one of New Zealand's most respected Māori artists, Emily Karaka has been an opportunity to learn, ask questions and grow confidence in her own practice.

Together they are exploring Hinenuitepō, atua wāhine and the female form. Through their tuakana-teina relationship, they are also creating space for honest conversations about bodily autonomy and what it means for wāhine to reclaim how they are seen.

We're proud to support the Kīngi Tūheitia Portraiture Award, a kaupapa that creates opportunities for emerging Māori artists.

The opening at Puke Ariki brought together Te Kīngitanga, artists, whānau and the community to celebrate a touring exhibition that champions emerging Māori artists and honours the stories of their tūpuna.

These images are from the opening at Puke Ariki, where Te Kīngitanga, artists, whānau and the community came together to welcome the exhibition to Taranaki.

We can write anything.

From rewriting X-Men stories as a kid to becoming one of this year's New Voices of Aotearoa, Tīhema Baker - Writer is helping broaden what Māori literature can be.
Ahead of the release of One Day a Taniwha, we sat down with Tīhema to talk about fatherhood, storytelling and writing the stories he couldn't always find on the bookshelf.

He pou tokomanawa kua hinga. He toki o te ao kapa haka kua whetūrangitia.

Creative New Zealand Toi Aotearoa acknowledges with deep sadness the passing of Raymond Kaiki (Tainui, Aotea), a highly respected rangatira of te ao kapa haka.

A founding member of Te Rōpū Tūtū Kā'ika and a long-serving member of the Aotea Māori Performing Arts Committee, now Te Kāhui Maunga, Raymond devoted more than four decades to kapa haka as a performer, composer, tutor, judge, chairperson and kaumātua. His knowledge, musical expertise and commitment to nurturing others left an enduring mark on generations of kapa haka practitioners throughout Aotearoa.

Raymond also made a significant contribution to Te Matatini, serving as a judge across eight campaigns and and playing a key role in organising the pōwhiri and tikanga for Te Matatini o Te Kāhui Maunga 2025.

We extend our heartfelt aroha to Raymond's whānau, Te Rōpū Tūtū Kā'ika, Te Kāhui Maunga, and all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.

Haere, haere, haere atu rā e te rangatira. Moe mai rā.

Taka mai i hea te pō o te rangi. Taka mai i runga o ngā maunga e. Takoto mai i runga i ngā Marae tapu, o te ika nui, te ika roa, te ika a Maui-tikitiki a Taranga e takoto nei. He pou whakairo i te ao waiata, he kaitito i ngā oro e rere nei i te hau, he kaiārahi i ngā reo e whakakotahi ana i te ngākau.

Creative New Zealand mourns the loss of singer, educator, choral leader and musical pillar of the community, Robert Wiremu.

A fiercely intelligent and phenomenal musician, one of his many enduring legacies will be Erebus: Reimagining Mozart, a reconceiving of Mozart’s Requiem for Chamber Music New Zealand and Voices New Zealand. The poignant choral work was a lauded as a triumph, placing it within an Aotearoa context as a reflection and commemoration of the Erebus tragedy.

We send our aroha to Robert’s whānau and loved ones.

Te Putōrino a Raukatauri iri piri runga peka. Kei roto ko te phi o te tangi. Korowhitawhita e.
