When Riki Manuel (CNZM) and Baye Riddell (ONZM) received news of their recent King's Birthday Honours, neither thought they were the sort of people who should be recognised.

One started carving from a kitchen table in Christchurch with little more than a G-clamp. The other discovered clay while planning a return home to the East Coast.

Decades later, both have helped shape Ngā Toi Māori in Aotearoa.

Kua hinga he tōtara i te wao nui a Tāne.

We acknowledge the passing of Emeritus Professor Whatarangi Winiata, recipient of the Te Waka Toi Tā Kingi Ihaka Award and one of the great Māori leaders of his generation.

The whakahohe, or activation ritual for this exhibition unfolded as a living threshold - where Te Ao Māori and the deep occult practice of the artist converged in a shared field of intention. The space was opened through pao, and invocations calling in ancestral presence - the tupuna of the manu, of the artist and of the city. Runes created in wai tapu were placed upon the floor, as living symbols, runic currents embodied, pathways of transformation within the field of the pavilion. Through breath, gesture, and the focused will, the artist and Mareikura engaged in a co-creative act - awakening the mauri of the works and the space itself. This ritual is not performance, but invocation: a weaving of worlds where ancient lineages speak to one another, activating a current of remembrance, protection, and becoming. He mauri tau, he mauri koa, he mauri aroha, he mauri whanaungatanga. Tihei mauri ora.
