The 147th Girmit Day Anniversary was commemorated in Auckland last weekend with the Fiji High Commission joining more than a thousand members of the Indo-Fijian community to honour the arrival of the first Girmitiyas to Fiji aboard the Leonidas on 14 May 1879.

The occasion served as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices, resilience, and enduring legacy of the Girmitiyas whose contributions helped shape modern Fiji and continue to enrich communities abroad.

The event brought together descendants of the early Girmitiyas from across Auckland, reflecting the strong cultural and historical ties that continue to unite the Indo-Fijian diaspora in New Zealand.

Among the distinguished guests were Prime Minister of New Zealand, Christopher Luxton, Leader of the Labour Party, Chris Hipkins, members of Parliament, the Commissioner of Police, and former Governor-General of New Zealand Sir Anand Satyanand.

Representing Fiji were former Deputy Prime Minister and current Member of Parliament Hon Dr. Biman Prasad and Fiji’s High Commissioner to New Zealand H.E. Ratu Inoke Kubuabola. Also in attendance was India’s High Commissioner to New Zealand, H.E. Muanpuii Saiawi.

In his address, Prime Minister Luxon acknowledged the struggles and sacrifices endured by the Girmitiya's and highlighted the important contributions of Indo-Fijians in strengthening New Zealand’s multicultural society.

Hon. Dr. Biman Prasad focused his remarks on remembrance, resilience, and recognition of the Girmit legacy. He paid tribute to descendants of Girmitiya's in New Zealand for preserving and promoting Girmit history, culture, and identity while contributing significantly to New Zealand society.

The event featured cultural performances showcasing traditions passed down through generations and included the presentation of medals to senior citizens in recognition of their sacrifices and lifelong contributions to the community.

The event was organized by the Fiji Girmit Foundation New Zealand, highlighting the historical significance of the Girmitiyas and their lasting impact on future generations. Speakers throughout the program also emphasized the importance of social inclusion, unity, and continued recognition of the contributions made by Indo-Fijians in New Zealand.

The commemoration concluded with a renewed call to preserve the legacy of the Girmitiya's while fostering unity, understanding, and appreciation of Fiji’s rich multicultural heritage.

Fiji High Commission Engages in Promoting Fiji Made Products at the Convenience and Impulse Retailing NZ Expo.

The Fiji High Commission in New Zealand today reinforced its commitment to promoting Fiji-made products and strengthening trade partnerships during a visit to the Convenience and Impulse Retailing NZ Expo held at Due Drop Events Centre, Manukau, Auckland.

The delegation was led by Fiji’s High Commissioner to New Zealand, His Excellency Ratu Inoke Kubuabola and accompanied by Second Secretary Mr. Kanakatakata, Business Development Manager Mr. Kritesh Maharaj, and Consular Officer Mr. Emosi Simolo.

The event focused exclusively on business-to-business (B2B) engagements for registered retailers and distributors and provided a valuable platform for networking with key industry decision-makers from across New Zealand’s retail sector.

Representing Fiji proudly at the expo was Panpac Distributors, the New Zealand subsidiary of the CJ Patel Group and one of the leading distributors of Fiji-made products in New Zealands retail stores like Foodstuffs, Woolworths and Costco

The company strategically showcased a wide range of Fiji-made products among major retail industry players.

General Manager of Panpac Distributors, Mr Ranjiv Ram, emphasized the importance of engaging directly with retailers, distributors, petrol station operators, and dairy owners to expand the visibility and market reach of Fiji-made products throughout New Zealand.

Discussions also highlighted the challenges currently facing the sugar market supply chain and the importance of strategic investment to enhance brand value and long-term sustainability rather than competing solely on price.

Panpac NZ further reflected on the company’s longstanding investments and partnerships with trusted regional brands through the CJ Patel Group, including the introduction of Samoa’s Vailima brand into the New Zealand market, underscoring the importance of value creation in an increasingly competitive retail environment.

The Fiji delegation also had the opportunity to witness firsthand the growing interest in Fiji-made products, with one of the operators of Caltex service stations agreeing in principle to stock Fiji’s popular signature Bongos products across 12 service station outlets.

The Fiji High Commission reaffirmed that it will continue to actively engage in trade promotion initiatives and participate in strategic platforms that create greater economic opportunities and deliver long-term dividends for Fiji and its exporters.

Ends.
