FIJI’S HIGH COMMISSIONER TO NZ RECEIVES COURTESY CALL FROM FOUNDER OF BOMB FREE SOLOMON ISLANDS, FEATURING IN THE RECENT MOVIE, “WAR BELOW”

The Fiji High Commissioner to New Zealand, His Excellency Ratu Inoke Kubuabola was pleased to receive a courtesy call from Ms Maeverlyn Pitanoe, the Founder of Bomb Free Solomon Islands, who is a strong advocate and a survivor of the 2021 World War II unexploded bomb blast in Honiara. During her visit to the Fiji High Commission in Wellington, Ms Pitanoe was accompanied by the Director of Nine Islands Media Mr Tuki Laumea and Ms Cleo Fraser.

The purpose of the visit was to introduce the work of Bomb Free Solomon Islands and to share the organisation’s advocacy for increased regional and international support to address the continuing humanitarian, social and economic impacts of unexploded ordnance in the Solomon Islands.

It was an honour for the High Commissioner to congratulate Ms Pitanoe on the recently released documentary, “The War Below”, which documents the lived experiences of survivors and affected communities, while illustrating the enduring legacy of unexploded ordnance in the Solomon Islands. The newly released documentary brings a greater visibility to this important humanitarian issue and recognised the resilience and courage demonstrated by survivors in sharing their stories not only to the Pacific region but to international platforms.

Ms Pitanoe shared her personal accounts of the impacts of unexploded Ordnance on individuals, families and communities in the Solomon Islands. She also outlined the work being undertaken by Bomb Free Solomon Islands to amplify the voices of survivors and promote greater understanding of the long- term consequences of Unexploded ordnance (UXO) contamination.

The High Commissioner acknowledged the concerns raised by Ms Pitanoe and commended Bomb Free Solomon Islands for its commitment to advocating on behalf of her people and the affected communities.

At the conclusion of the meeting, High Commissioner Kubuabola reassured Ms Pitanoe that the Fiji High Commission to New Zealand will continue to welcome supporting constructive dialogue with Pacific Stakeholders and will continue to welcome Pacific advocates and partners whose work contributes to regional cooperation, humanitarian action, and shared vision of a peaceful resilient and prosperous Blue Pacific for wellbeing of our Pacific families.

FIJI AND NEW ZEALAND SENIOR TRADE OFFICIALS HOLD BILATERAL MEETING TO ADVANCE TRADE AND ECONOMIC COOPERATION

The Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Dr. Raijeli Taga, today met with Mr. Vitalis Vangelis, New Zealand’s Deputy Secretary for Trade and Economic, for a productive bilateral discussion focused on strengthening the Fiji–New Zealand partnership and advancing shared trade and economic priorities.

The meeting reaffirmed the strong and enduring relationship between Fiji and New Zealand, with discussions centred on enhancing bilateral trade and investment, deepening economic cooperation, and identifying practical opportunities to address shared regional and global challenges. Both sides also exchanged views on supply chain resilience, including fuel supply security, and underscored the importance of coordinated approaches to strengthening economic resilience across the Pacific.

The meeting was also attended by Fiji’s High Commissioner to New Zealand, H.E. Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, New Zealand’s High Commissioner to Fiji, H.E. Greg Andrews, and senior officials from both the Fiji and New Zealand Governments, reflecting the close and enduring partnership between the two countries and their shared commitment to advancing bilateral cooperation.

The two senior officials reaffirmed their shared commitment to fostering regional prosperity, economic resilience and stability, including through the Duavata Partnership, which Fiji and New Zealand are expected to renew this week. They acknowledged the Partnership as an important platform for advancing practical cooperation across priority areas and further strengthening the longstanding relationship between the two countries.

Dr. Taga emphasised the importance of developing practical, locally driven solutions supported by strong institutional frameworks to deliver sustainable and inclusive economic growth. She expressed Fiji’s appreciation for New Zealand’s longstanding partnership and continued support in advancing trade, economic development and regional cooperation, noting that trusted partnerships remain essential to achieving shared development objectives and strengthening the resilience of Pacific economies.

Mr. Vangelis reaffirmed New Zealand’s commitment to further deepening its trade and economic partnership with Fiji and acknowledged Fiji’s leadership in advancing regional trade initiatives. He also provided an overview of the key agenda items to be discussed at the upcoming Future of Investment and Trade Partnerships (FIT-P) Senior Officials’ Meeting and Ministerial Meeting, highlighting opportunities for closer collaboration on trade, investment and economic integration.

Both officials recognised the value of regional and plurilateral economic initiatives, including the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) and FIT-P, as practical mechanisms for promoting resilient supply chains, facilitating investment, enhancing economic cooperation and enabling like-minded economies to exchange best practices and develop tangible, outcomes-focused solutions to common challenges.

The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to maintaining close engagement through regular bilateral dialogue and continued technical cooperation to progress shared trade and economic priorities over the coming year.

Fiji High Commission Hosts Luncheon for Hon. Alitia Bainivalu and delegation

The Fiji High Commission in Wellington hosted a luncheon in honour of the Honorable Alitia Bainivalu, Fiji's Minister for Fisheries and Forests, following her participation in the 25th Forum Fisheries Committee Ministerial Meeting (FFCMIN25) and the 7th Regional Fisheries Management Meeting (RFMM7) held in New Zealand.

The luncheon provided an opportunity for the Mission to brief the Honorable Minister on its ongoing efforts to strengthen the bilateral relationship between Fiji and New Zealand, while continuing to serve and support the growing Fijian diaspora across Aotearoa New Zealand.

During the discussions, Mission officials highlighted the significant contribution of Fijian nationals participating in New Zealand's Recognized Seasonal Employer (RSE) Scheme and explored the possibility of developing a similar framework for Fijians employed under contractual arrangements in New Zealand's forestry sector.
Such an initiative has the potential to enhance worker welfare, strengthen labour mobility, and create sustainable employment opportunities for Fijians.

The Mission also provided updates on its broader diplomatic, trade, consular and community engagement initiatives, reaffirming its commitment to advancing Fiji's national interests and fostering stronger people-to-people links between Fiji and New Zealand.

The Fiji High Commission remains steadfast in advancing Fiji's presence in New Zealand by capitalizing on opportunities through strategic partnerships, labour mobility, trade, investment, and closer engagement with the Fijian community.
