Kilbirnie Early Learners A positive and stimulating educational and developmental experience where your child can have fun an

Established in 1992, Kilbirnie Early Learners is a non-profit community based and purpose built childcare centre in Kilbirnie, Wellington. The centre provides a friendly, nurturing and vibrant environment which strongly reflects our multicultural community. Our educational programme is planned in conjunction with the Ministry of Education curriculum Te Whàriki. This forms the foundation of our day

to day practice, activities and interactions with the children/tamariki, and is designed to support and challenge your child during their important early years. Throughout their time at Kilbirnie Early Learners your child will be given opportunities to express themselves creatively, physically, mentally, emotionally, culturally, and spiritually. We support children’s development by providing learning experiences that pertain to the children’s interests and strengths, dispositions, language, and include a culturally appropriate curriculum, which is conducive to the Early Childhood Curriculum. These are designed to stimulate and respond to the children’s interests, with age-appropriate activities such as art experiences, Te Reo Maori, waiata, collage, puzzles, water play, and stories. These activities in turn promote children’s autonomy, early literacy and math’s/numeracy skills, as well as physical skills and skills for life.

Born To Dance : https://www.tvnz.co.nz/shows/les-mills-born-to-move

Today Taika & I loved 'The Ocean' a 25min interactive story that lifts the heart rate and helps get some energy out! I'd recommend creating a clear space where you can and turning up the music to get the most out of it!

There are quite a few videos there to choose from, so let us know if you recommend another of these fun videos!

Designed to nurture a life-long love of physical activity, BORN TO MOVE helps children experience the joy and vitality of moving to music, combining fun and fitness in way that children love. www.lesmills.com/ondemand

Kia ora KEL whānau,
I hope you are all doing well in your bubbles! And this week is flying by like Louie likes to leap and fly!

I thought I’d do my best to share a few activities appropriate for under 5’s (but enjoyable for the whole whānau) over the next few days. My hopes are that they may help engage your tamariki if you need to work or have a few moments to yourself, or that you may like to enjoy doing these activities with your tamariki.

It’d be awesome if you added any KEL families to this group so they can join in the fun too, and also if you have any specific activity ideas you’d like help with e.g. recipes – please let me know in the comments.

Ngā mihi, KEL team

Kia ora KEL whanau,
We are currently in Matariki, the Maori New Year. If you would like to take a look at the Matariki stars, they are visible in the north east early morning before sunrise. At KEL we have been discussing Matariki and especially after being apart during lockdown we would love to celebrate as a centre whanau.
Save the date Friday 24th July, with more details and invitations to come ✨

Kia ora KEL whānau,

With all your love & support we made it through the first week post-lockdown. We’ve been so impressed with how well your tamariki are settling back into routines at KEL. We have loved seeing how excited everyone is to see us back, & even more beautiful is seeing their joy to be reunited with their friends again.

Just a reminder that this week is our last week with reduced hours from 9am-1pm. We will be closed on Monday for Queens Birthday, and return on Tuesday 2nd June with operation hours 8:30am-2:30pm.

Last week we started some collaborative art to display as a welcome back. It’s been fun to have a project that draws the tamariki to work together towards a shared goal.

We’re also curious about any milestones, new learning, or special memories that you’ve made during your lockdown experience. We’d love for you to share these with us by sending through photos &/or stories that’s you’d be happy to have documented in your child’s learning journal & display on the wall with this art. Feel free to send these through our email [email protected]

Happy Monday whānau, we wish you all a fabulous week ahead.

Kia ora koutou,

Yes, we OPEN our KEL bubble tomorrow and the kaiako/teachers are so excited to see you all. The tamariki can expect to see Jess, Nikki, Samra & Helen on Monday, & Jannie will join us on Thursday when she’s recovered from a small surgery.

Please know we’re going to be so happy to see you all again, but we can’t accept your hugs yet. We are required to social distance & will have to keep your transitions into & out of the centre brief. However we are still very much available to discuss your child’s routines and rhythms currrently so we can best support their daily needs.

We understand there will be many families concerned about how their child will settle back into KEL, but rest assured we have many exciting activities planned for the tamariki, and also some calming, restful experiences too. We know to expect that there will be some adjusting to do, but we are very flexible & will ensure everyone is feeling supported & cared for.

I am putting together a music playlist if you would like to share your child’s favourite songs in the comments below, I’d be more than happy to add them.

& we’ll see you all in the coming week!
♥️

If you, or you know someone who needs food, please get in touch with the wonderful people at Wellington City Mission, Salvation Army, or St Vincent De Pauls. They can and will help you.

Kia ora KEL whanau,
Just a wee message to check in on you all & let you know you’re being thought of during this period of lockdown. This could be a good time to add any KEL families to our FB page, so that we can still feel a sense of our community in supporting each other.
Would anyone be interested in me sharing a few ideas of experiences you could enjoy at home? Or would you enjoy sharing what you’re doing at home to inspire each other?
Also, if anyone is struggling could you please send a private message and I will see what I can do to provide support for your whanau. This page is still for KEL whanau past, present & future, we embrace you all as whanau, and send our love to you.
Aroha/love,
The KEL team

Our Story

Our Centre teachers provide children with a nurturing environment as they take their first steps into the wider world. This is often the important first start for young children as they enter their early childhood educational experience.

Teachers form strong, reciprocal and respectful relationships with each family, supporting the children’s sense of well being and belonging. There are opportunities for parents/whānau to be involved in their children’s learning, and their aspirations for their child are acknowledged in the learning programme.

Our full-time teachers are experienced, fully qualified and certificated early childhood educators and have experience with children and their families in kindergartens, other centres and language nests. Our teachers undertake regular professional development to ensure current theories and changes in the sector are supporting their professional practice.
