The Auckland Harbour Bridge was officially opened 64 years ago today. It was a transformational project for Auckland, unlocking the North Shore for development and shaping the city. The bridge was financed by dedicated loans, which were paid off over time through tolls on drivers crossing the Waitemata.

These days, taxpayer funding plays a bigger role in large-scale infrastructure projects. Should major urban infrastructure projects be funded by the people who use them, or should all New Zealanders make a contribution? What’s fair?

DID YOU KNOW? Wellington's cable car is one of New Zealand’s only examples of a funicular transport system. This means that the carriages counter balance each other. The cable car started operation on 22 February 1902 and by 1912 was carrying over a million people a year.
