The Auckland Harbour Bridge was officially opened 64 years ago today. It was a transformational project for Auckland, unlocking the North Shore for development and shaping the city. The bridge was financed by dedicated loans, which were paid off over time through tolls on drivers crossing the Waitemata.

These days, taxpayer funding plays a bigger role in large-scale infrastructure projects. Should major urban infrastructure projects be funded by the people who use them, or should all New Zealanders make a contribution? What’s fair?
