EKTA is launching a multicultural community choir — “The Sound of Us”. The choir aims to bring people together across cultures, faiths, ages, and backgrounds through music, friendship, and connection. The idea is for the group to perform non-religious songs of the various communities that now make up Wellington.

We are keen to encourage participation from Wellington’s diverse communities. No singing experience is needed, and everyone is welcome — from experienced singers to complete beginners.

The choir will meet weekly for 8 weeks, culminating in a community performance celebrating the diversity and talent of our wider community. Interested participants can register by filling The Sound Of Us Registration Form and emailing it to [email protected]

Citizens Advice Wellington Community Survey

Kia ora!

As part of a service and needs review project we are undertaking for Citizens Advice Wellington, we are reaching out to community organisations and asking them to fill in a short survey. https://forms.office.com/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=tJavBF9qd0mzaFxpOFIGx_rhDbKOk61Evzx1gIUColJUQTgzSFpSMzNGWUdBSDNaQ1ZEWU0yWEY4Wi4u&route=shorturl

The survey has been designed to help us understand the needs of our community and how we can best position our information and advice services to help the people of Wellington both now, and into the future.

The survey will close on 3 June 2026.

The information we collect from this survey will be analysed alongside other data and information we are collecting. Any data from this survey that is used in the report will remain anonymous and not be attributed to you. We want to hear your views about who our services are reaching and who they are not reaching and why, as well as how we might improve our services so we stay relevant and of value to the people of Wellington.

We so appreciate all you do for communities in Wellington. Thank you for filling in this community organisations survey! (Survey Link below)

🌤️ Morning update | Wednesday 22 April, 9.30am

Mōrena Pōneke. The State of Emergency remains in place while the risk of further impacts continues. While the heaviest rain has passed, hazards remain. Please stay alert for slips and landslides, these can occur quickly and without warning, even after the rain has eased.

For the latest information, visit 👉www.wellington.govt.nz

Emergency services and response teams are actively working in affected areas, including supporting properties impacted by flooding and landslips, particularly in the southern suburbs. The Wellington City Emergency Operations Centre remains active and will continue operating for the duration of the emergency.

SOUTHERN LANDFILL
The Southern Landfill has been impacted by heavy rain and is open for commercial waste only. It is not open to the public for domestic waste disposal at this time.

This will be reviewed daily. We are working on options to support residents to safely dispose of storm-related waste and will provide an update in the coming days.

Kerbside rubbish and recycling collections will continue as normal.

COUNCIL FACILITIES AND SERVICES
Most Council facilities and services are reopening today (Wednesday 22 April), including pools, recreation centres, libraries, and community centres.

The following remain closed:
📚 Island Bay Library (due to flood-related damage)
📖 Newlands Library and Community Centre (due to previous storm damage)
🥅 Grassed sports fields

Botanic Garden ki Paekākā and Ōtari Wilton’s Bush are open. However, we recommend avoiding the Town Belt and reserves while rangers assess tracks and clear debris.

🦺 SAFETY INFORMATION
Conditions can change quickly. Be prepared and have a grab bag ready in case you need to leave at short notice.

If you see a dangerous situation developing, do not wait for an official warning, act immediately.
Call 111 in an emergency, or 04 499 444 if you need welfare support.

You will start to notice our day to day public communications will resume however, we will continue to provide updates throughout the day.

Afternoon Pōneke. With the weather appearing to settle, we know you are eager to begin clean-up, however, Wellington remains in a State of Emergency with more rain expected later today.

For your safety, please do not self-deploy to help with clean-up efforts at this time.

👷Emergency services and response teams are actively working in affected areas.
⚠️ Conditions remain hazardous, including flooding, slips, debris and unstable structures.
🚒 Staying off the roads help keep routes clear for emergency responders.

We know many people are keen to help, thank you. There will be opportunities to support once it is safe to do so.

Our key messages remain the same:
✔️ Stay indoors if your home is safe; avoid travel unless essential.
✔️ Keep pets inside and livestock on higher ground.
✔️ Clear drains and gutters if safe to do so.
✔️ Check on neighbours who may need help.
✔️ Move to higher ground if water levels rise.
✔️ Ground saturation from heavy rain increases the risk of slips.

If you need help:
📞 Call 04 499 4444, for welfare support.
🚨 In an emergency, call 111
