🇩🇪🇳🇿 On Tuesday, we came together to mark 🇩🇪✨ German Unity Day here in 🇳🇿 Aotearoa New Zealand, a day of joy that celebrates the reunification of Germany as a democratic, free and prosperous nation. 🎉🥂

📸 These photos capture a wonderful evening with friends, partners and guests who help make the German-New Zealand relationship so special.

🎤 In her address, German Ambassador Kristina Jonek reflected on the courage behind the events of 1990 and on the enduring bonds between our two countries: “In this era of geopolitical volatility, the friendship between Germany and New Zealand is a cornerstone of stability.”

That friendship is built on people: about 30,000 Germans living in New Zealand, some 200,000 New Zealanders of German descent, and countless New Zealanders who travel, study and work in Germany. It is also built on shared values and on cooperation that is delivering real results, from the EU-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement to our science and technology partnership, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2027. 🤝

🥂 We are honoured that Paula Wilson, Deputy Secretary for Europe, Middle East & Africa, and Australia at the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, joined us to represent the Ministry. Thank you for your warm words and for the close partnership between our foreign ministries.

🎶 A heartfelt thank you to Barbara Paterson, who sang the German and New Zealand national anthems so beautifully and gave the evening a moving start.

🎓 We were also delighted to welcome a group of German exchange students who are currently studying at Hutt Valley High School. It was a pleasure to have these young ambassadors of our two countries with us, and a reminder of how much people-to-people exchange matters.

Thank you to everyone who joined us. Let’s keep strengthening these bonds of trust and standing together for freedom, the rule of law and a peaceful future. 🥂✨

“I want your money.” That was the message from Germany’s Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil to business leaders at the country’s first Invest in Germany Summit in Berlin 🇩🇪.

Around 200 German and international executives, including leaders from the UK 🇬🇧, gathered to discuss the opportunities and challenges of doing business in Germany.

The summit has already drawn billions in investment commitments and the objective is to transform potential into concrete projects.

Turns out rock, paper, scissors has a new contender: human rights.

Germany is heading back to the UN Human Rights Council! 🇩🇪

With 163 votes from the UN General Assembly in New York, well above the 97-vote majority required, Germany has been elected for a three-year term, from 1 January 2027 to 31 December 2029. Regionally, Japan was also elected to the Council for its seventh term, representing the Asia-Pacific region.

Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said Germany would work with its partners to strengthen the Council and improve human rights protection worldwide. Germany’s priorities include protecting human rights defenders, advancing the rule of law, defending freedom of expression and supporting accountability for human rights violations.

It will be Germany’s sixth term on the Council, which was founded 20 years ago. Germany last held a seat from 2023 to 2025.

A new term, and a chance to keep human rights in play. 🌍

Germany's academic scene just got a major upgrade 👩‍🎓🇩🇪

Meet the newly selected Universities of Excellence and research alliances: the University of Freiburg, Friedrich Schiller University Jena, the University of Cologne, Rhine-Main Universities, and Ruhr Innovation Lab.

From 2027, these five institutions will join ten continuing Universities of Excellence and consortia in Germany's funding programme. It's a big moment for the country's research landscape-and a reason to put on your study and research radar.

What does "Excellence" mean? It means long-term support to strengthen research, teaching, infrastructure, and international connections. For students and researchers, that could mean more opportunities to take part in ambitious research, connect across disciplines, and collaborate with partners around the world. 🎓🌏

🇩🇪🎓🇳🇿 German and New Zealand universities and research centres are closer than you might think!
University of Auckland - Waipapa Taumata Rau counts Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg and Heidelberg University among its exchange partners, University of Otago also has a Heidelberg exchange, and Freiburg sends students to University of Canterbury and Auckland. Tübingen has agreements with two New Zealand universities: Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington and University of Otago. On the research side, the DAAD-Education New Zealand programme has paired Auckland with Paderborn, TU Dortmund and Universitätsklinikum Hamburg-Eppendorf, Canterbury with Westcoast University of Applied Sciences, and Otago with Helmholtz Munich. From the humanities to medicine and engineering, the connections keep growing.

This postcard was created as part of a collaborative initiative between the German Embassy Wellington and Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington. The project invited students to design postcards as part of their studies under the guidance of Dr Monica Tempian, Senior Lecturer in German at the School of Languages and Cultures.

The German Embassy greatly appreciates this initiative, which highlights the value of language learning, cultural exchange, and the strong connections between Germany and Aotearoa New Zealand.

From Munich to Auckland: O’zapft is! 🍻✨ Our Deputy Head of Mission, Ferdinand Jenrich, joined the German-New Zealand business community at the German-New Zealand Chamber of Commerce (GNZCC) Oktoberfest at Brad’s Warehouse BRAD’S last night.

🎶💃 With live music, dancing and a vibrant party atmosphere, it was an evening full of energy, laughter and great conversations, and a reminder of how close the ties between Germany and New Zealand are.

A big Dankeschön to the German-New Zealand Chamber of Commerce for organising such a warm and festive evening, and to naming sponsor DACHSER, Lufthansa Group and all sponsors for supporting it.
