How to use a fire blanket 🔥🔥

👉Fire blankets are effective for minor fires only.
👉Turn off all electricity and gas sources, such as the stove.
👉Completely cover the fire with the blanket to cut off oxygen supply.
👉Wrap the top edges of the blanket around your hands to prevent burns.
👉Gently place the blanket over the fire; do not throw it to avoid spreading flames.
👉Leave the blanket in place for about 30 minutes to cool down.
👉If unable to extinguish the fire, evacuate and call 111 for the fire brigade.
👉Fire blankets are single-use items; dispose of and replace them after use.

Fire exits! 🏃‍♀️🏃Here's what you gotta know:

👉What you need is usually outlined in the NZ building code
👉Accessibility is crucial, and needs to be designed for people with disabilities or mobility issues
👉They need to be clearly marked with illuminated EXIT signs (and these have their own list of requirements)
👉The route to them must be unobstructed (at all times!)
👉They should be equipped with emergency lighting that will still work in the event of a blackout
👉They can't be propped open!
👉Like other fire safety tools, they do need to be regularly inspected and tested. Giving them a look over during a fire dill is a good time to test them out.
