Help us keep our hospitals safer this winter

Winter illnesses are continuing to circulate across the Wellington district, and our hospitals are seeing increased numbers of patients needing care.

If you're attending a hospital appointment, we kindly ask that you consider bringing just one support person with you, unless additional assistance is needed. Limiting the number of people in waiting areas helps reduce the spread of illness and protects vulnerable patients, whānau and staff.

Thank you for doing your part to help keep our community safe and our hospitals running smoothly this winter. 💙

Thank an Orderly Day | 20 August

Today we celebrate and thank our incredible Orderlies, whose dedication, professionalism and care help keep our hospital and health services running every day.

Orderlies are often the behind-the-scenes heroes of healthcare, supporting patients, whānau and staff in countless ways. Whether they're transporting patients, delivering equipment, supporting clinical teams, or helping ensure our facilities operate smoothly, their contribution is essential to the care we provide.

Quite simply, we couldn't do what we do without them.

Their mahi touches every corner of our organisation, helping create a safe, caring and efficient environment for patients and colleagues alike. They are often a reassuring presence during a patient's journey and a dependable support for our clinical teams.

On Thank an Orderly Day, we acknowledge the vital role our Orderlies play and the difference they make every single day. Thank you for your commitment, compassion and hard work. We see you, we value you, and we appreciate everything you do.

Ngā mihi nui and thank you to all our Orderlies. 💙

🚦 Green lights to help Hutt Hospital doctors reach life-threatening emergencies

On-call doctors at Hutt Hospital are using an existing provision under New Zealand road rules that allows vehicles displaying a flashing green light to signal that they are responding to a medical emergency.

The green beacon and bright green-and-white DOCTOR sign help other road users recognise when an on-call specialist is urgently making their way to hospital.

🚗 What does this mean for drivers?
If you see a vehicle displaying a flashing green light, please make way and stop if necessary, when it is safe to do so, to allow the vehicle to pass.

Importantly, the green beacon does not give doctors any special driving privileges. They must follow all road rules, including speed limits, traffic lights and stop signs.

The beacons are being provided to on-call anaesthetists, intensivists and obstetricians who may be called urgently to Hutt Hospital when a person's life or health is at immediate risk.

With ongoing roadworks and congestion affecting travel times around Lower Hutt, helping these doctors reach hospital safely and quickly can make a real difference. 💚

Need healthcare but not sure where to start?

If it's an emergency, the Emergency Department (ED) is the right place. But for many everyday health concerns, there may be other options that can help you sooner.

💻 Online GP (now FREE for under 14s)
📞 Healthline: 0800 611 116. There is a callback service if you don't want to wait on hold.
🏥 Urgent Care and After Hours clinics.
💊 Your local pharmacy. Under the Extended Pharmacy Service, some treatments are now free or lower cost. Call your local to find out.

ED teams prioritise the most seriously unwell patients first, so if your situation isn't an emergency, you may face a long wait.
