Being curious and taking initiative are valuable traits within the digital public service. Due to the ever-changing nature of the digital landscape, as a society we are accountable for ensuring that these changes make a positive difference.

Alan is currently at ACC in the M365 Team, where he has been doing a range of work. A particularly notable piece of work he has been involved in has been engaging with ACC staff members that have accessibility needs to determine how the how the M365 team can help them.

Everyone should be able to access technology in a way that suits their requirements, so it’s fantastic to see someone who is new to the public sector recognising this and being involved in enabling digital progress.

Ever heard of the NZ Energy Quarterly? Our very own graduate Hemi was updating the coal data for MBIE for the report during lockdown. Data has been essential to understanding the highs and lows of the economic impacts of COVID.

As well as placing the New Zealand economy internationally, Hemi has a broad scope of international relations, and how this data helps create stories.

Hemi studied accounting and economics at Auckland University, so MBIE was a natural fit, but with a digital spin he meshes the two worlds successfully.

His interest in the bigger picture is a motivating factor, as well as the stability of having a job, his colleagues and the other graduates.

Meet Ty,

Ty majored in Information Systems at Victoria University and viewed the GovTechTalent Graduate Programme as a compatible option aligned with his interests. The agency rotation policy was a concept that appealed to him and provided opportunities for an IT role in Government.

Ty conducted a vast array of work across multiple teams in areas of technology, data, digital integration and project delivery. He found that the wide range of experiences with different roles and teams enabled him to acquire many small, but niche traits from his many interactions within these roles: ‘This breadth of experience and flexibility benefits you as you progress through the different agencies and acquire different skills and traits from an expansive network of people.’ These were further supplemented by the great mentors he was surrounded with that helped him establish networks and enabled him to become better at expressing himself.

Ty recommends the GovTechTalent Graduate for those from any background looking for a fresh approach to career development as he relished the feeling of progressing through more than one role and gaining new insights.
