Say no to Labour’s Orwellian Newspeak Bill, otherwise known as the Plain Language Bill.
No one needs it – it’s not even an issue and perhaps Labour should look into the mirror as to who is actually making language harder to understand for all Kiwis.
It started with NZTA changing its name to Waka Kotahi. Then came the Ministry of Children, now Oranga Tamariki, and Homes and Communities, now Kainga Ora.
Then the Government and the Public Service Commission joined in with new logos, putting Maori on top of English.
Next, under Nanaia Mahuta, DIA got changed to Te Tari Taiwhenua, and now Maori comes before English in the passport.
In the latest development, Health NZ has officially adopted its name Te Whatu Ora, and the Ministry of Health has become Manatu Hauora.
Maori is a beautiful language, but New Zealand is an incredibly multiethnic nation. We take pride in having such a linguistically diverse community – Samoan, Tongan, Fijian, Chinese, Hindi, Punjabi, Thai, Vietnamese and so many more. At the same time as treasuring Maori and our other languages, we also need a common bond, a language everyone can understand and can do business in, and that is English.
Let us be clear – clear communication is good. But it never requires you to dumb down the English language into Orwellian Newspeak like this Bill will be doing. And clear, plain-language communication starts with using English as our primary language.
