He Maimai Aroha

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Leo Koziol.

Leo was a passionate advocate for Māori storytelling and a steadfast champion of Indigenous voices. By founding the Wairoa Māori Film Festival in 2005 and through his work across Aotearoa and around the world, he helped create opportunities for Māori filmmakers and elevated stories that deserve to be seen and celebrated.

His generosity, vision, and deep commitment to creating space for others have left an enduring mark on the Aotearoa screen industry and the communities he served.

His legacy lives on through the stories he championed, the people he supported, and the lasting impact of his mahi.

🎉 Toronto, here we come!

Two productions with strong New Zealand connections are heading to the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) for their world premieres.🎬

God Bless You, Mr Kopu, the debut feature from writer-director Alex Liu and producer Roxi Bull, will premiere in TIFF's Centrepiece programme. The New Zealand-Australian co-production is a bold, distinctive debut and an exciting milestone for the filmmakers behind it.

Also making its world premiere is Tenzing, an international production filmed in Nepal and New Zealand, including at Aoraki / Mount Cook, The Remarkables and Mt Head.

A huge congratulations to the filmmakers, cast, crew and industry partners who helped bring these projects to life. We're proud to see New Zealand stories, talent and screen capability celebrated on one of the world's biggest festival stages.

Writer-director Paloma Schneideman and lead cast member Ani Palmer will attend MIFF as festival guests, with members of the NZFC team also on the ground to support the film and connect with industry.
