Tālofa Lava! 31 May-6 June 2026 is Vaiaso o le Gagana Sāmoa - Sāmoa Language Week 2026! This is a special opportunity for us all to celebrate Sāmoan language, Sāmoan culture, and to promote the use of Sāmoan language in schools, at work and at home.

This year’s theme for Vaiaso o le Gagana Sāmoa is: E afua mai i mauga tetele manuia o le 'nu'u - From the high mountains are the blessings of the village.

In celebration of Vaiaso o le Gagana Sāmoa at Te Māhanga Karori Library we have a selection of resources on display from our wonderful children's Pacific languages collection. We encourage you to browse and borrow and practise together.

Kia ora koutou! It’s New Zealand music month and to celebrate our kupu o te rā is ‘kōpae pūoru’. 📀

‘Kōpae’ means disc and ‘pūoru’ means music or audio, together they refer to a CD or record.

You could ask "He aha te kōpae pūoru tino pai ki a koe?” What is your favourite cd/record?

We have lots of great kōpae pūoru available to borrow at Te Māhanga Karori library, come check them out!

Our Kohikohinga Māori collection at Te Māhanga Karori Library has recently transitioned to a special new classification system which we are very proud to share with you. Developed by Wellington City Library staff, it is based on 12 Atua and their associated areas of knowledge, with 13 Atua classes in total (including a combined class for Ranginui and Papatūānuku).

The pukapuka and other items in this collection are now shelved in alphabetical order first by Atua classification, and then within each class by cutter (author/title/subject).

We welcome you to explore the collection and the new classification system. If you have any pātai, our kaimahi are very happy to assist.

Nau mai ki Te Reo Tūrei - Welcome to Te Reo Tūrei!

It’s been a while, e hoa mā, so we thought it was fitting for our kupu o te rā to be “hoki.”

Used as a verb, hoki means to return. You can also see it on our returns chute as part of “wāhi whakahokinga” here at Te Māhanga 📚

So... kua hoki mai mātou – we are back 😊 Join us every Tūrei (or thereabouts) to expand our knowledge and celebrate te reo, one kupu at a time!
