Kia ora koutou – nau mai ki Te Reo Tūrei! This wiki is Te Wiki Kaumātua, senior’s week, an annual occasion with special events for kaumātua running all across Te Whanganui-a-Tara. So in honour of that, this week our kupu is not a single kupu, but instead a phrase: ‘He taonga te pāhake,’ which translates as ‘to grow old is a gift.’

We’ve got a jam-packed wiki for the kaumātua of Karori and beyond. Here are the events we’re hosting at Te Māhanga:

☕ Senior’s Morning Tea - Wednesday 11am-12pm

The hugely successful (and delicious) paramanawa, morning tea, is back for another year! Come grab a cuppa and some kai, and enjoy chats with others from your community.

💻 Digital Inclusion Talk – Thursday 11am-12pm

Come along to a talk covering all things digital. This special session focuses on practical advice on navigating an increasingly digital world.

📚 Libraries Intro Session for Chinese Seniors 11am-12pm

Join this introduction to core library services and resources, hosted by a library staff member who speaks both Mandarin and Cantonese.

Kia ora and nau mai ki Te Reo Tūrei. Our kupu today is 'whakangā.'

Whakangā means to take a breath, to relax and rest. We hope some of you are getting a chance to do so over these hararei kura, school holidays (although more likely it's busier than ever!)

As librarians, we often have a whole list of pukapuka that we can't wait to sit down with when we have a moment to whakangā. Is reading a good pukapuka your favourite way to unwind? What other ways do you like to whakangā?

También celebraremos el idioma māori con un divertido juego tradicional que combina música, coordinación y trabajo en equipo: ¡el Tī Rākau!
¡No se lo pierdan! Nos vemos este sábado de 11 a 12pm, amigos.

We’ll also celebrate Te Reo Māori by playing Tī Rākau, a traditional Māori game that combines music, coordination, and teamwork.

Mōrena! Kua whiti te rā! The sun is shining and the school holidays have begun! ☀️ ☀️ ☀️

We are so grateful to our community for celebrating Te Wiki o te Reo Māori with us at Te Māhanga Karori Library. The Karori Normal School kapa haka performance was a special highlight (they were mīharo!!!) 🥰❤️

The theme this year was 'Ake Ake Ake Mō Ake Tonu - A Forever Language’ with a focus on Te Reo Towns. We thought we'd share the history behind the name of our lovely suburb.

Karori is a derivative of 'Te Kaha-o-nga-rore', often shortened to 'Kaharore', which means 'the place of many bird snares'. Karori was once an abundant ngahere (forest) and mahinga kai (a food gathering place) for mana whenua. Although there are no longer many bird snares around Karori, there are still lots of manu around, especially at our neighbours Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne. 🍃
