🤝 Growing connections for families in Palmerston North

Through Lottery Community Funding for Change, we’re proud to support the Growing Together Learning Community Hub, delivered through the Welcoming Schools Programme and co‑funded by the Ministry of Education.

The hub brought families, schools, councils and community organisations together, helping parents build confidence, understand local services, and support their children’s learning and wellbeing.

This collaborative approach is strengthening connections, partnerships, and a sense of belonging for families across the community.

Connecting funders and communities in Upper Hutt ✅

We recently took part in the Meet the Funders workshop hosted by Upper Hutt City Council at Te Kupenga o Rongomai, alongside other funders and organisations supporting community groups and clubs.

With around 80 attendees, the evening created valuable space for one‑on‑one kōrero, shared insights, and reminders about re‑registering under the Incorporated Societies Act.

📢 Get in touch if you have questions about funding or re‑registration.

🙌The Lower Hutt team recently attended the Upper Hutt Multicultural Council Incorporated NOWRUZ cultural gathering held on 24 March that and hosted at Parliament buildings. The evening was filled with beautiful traditional dancing and singing performed by young people, and speeches from honoured guests. The team noted a highlight was seeing the stunning traditional garments and learning more about the cultural and historical importance of NOWRUZ.

We have a long history of supporting the Upper Hutt Multicultural Council through the Lottery Community Fund & the Community Organisation Grants Scheme. This enables them to support various events and celebrations of the ethnic communities in the region, such as the NOWRUZ celebration.

❗️The deadline to reregister under the Incorporated Societies Act 2022 is coming up fast!

If your society wants to keep operating, make sure you reregister before 5 April 2026. Not reregistering means you can’t continue as an incorporated society and may affect your ability to receive funding.

You'll need to:
- Update your constitution and review your processes
- Hold a general meeting to approve the new constitution
- Apply to reregister and upload your documents online

📣This week in Wellington, Volunteering New Zealand launched the State of the Decade of Volunteering Report. The report brings together 10 years of data and insights to show how volunteering in Aotearoa is changing.

Showing up are the Impact of COVID 19, changing work patterns and rising living costs for organisations and volunteers. The report highlights how many ways organisations and volunteers have adapted, strengthened their systems, and continued to support communities.

Despite the challenges, the sector remains strong, adaptable, and an essential aspect of community wellbeing.

DAY EIGHT - The Kindness Collective

Sarah Page and her team at the Kindness Collective provide a range of support for families and young people that need a little extra help. Especially, around the holidays.

Based in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, Sarah tells us about the Christmas Joy Store and Te Mākete Harikoa, KC’s social supermarket. Kindness is more than just a name, for KC it describes the caring and affirming way that they engage with the local people.

Another organisation that is able to operate due to the generous support of community and philanthropic giving, KC shows us why collective giving can lead to a more joyful Christmas for kids and their whānau.

Thank you again to Angela Gattung for her support of the Kindness Collective.

DAY SEVEN - Kōhine Robotics in Tairāwhiti

Today's giving story comes from one of the most innovative programmes to support female students.

With support from the Gattung Foundation, Tōnui Collab in Tairāwhiti Gisborne supports teams of year 6 - 9 girls from different kura to collaboratively experiment with VEX IQ Robotics.

Students also get to learn from wāhine leaders who are established in science and technology roles and gain confidence that they too can follow career pathways inspired by scientific study.

The Tōnui Collab story shows just how important it is to have visionary funders team up with passionate educators to provide remarkable opportunities for young people.

We want to thank Lytton High School for hosting our visit to the Kōhine Robotics programme, Shanon O'Connor for welcoming us into her kaupapa and Angela Gattung for being a wonderful human.

DAY SIX - Recognising our young people

This week we will be taking a closer look at how philanthropic giving is utilised across the country to support and empower rangatahi young people.

First up, we visit Te Ōhaka Tīwhera in Invercargill. Funded by Te Rourou One Foundation, this group of truly amazing young people form a panel to make funding decisions "by rangatahi, for rangatahi". Te Rourou embrace a high-trust, collaborative funding approach that shows we have a lot to learn from our rangatahi.

The purpose of Te Ōhaka Tīwhera is to make granting decisions to support young Māori people in the region. This group of future leaders are showing what can be achieved when you approach grant making with knowledge of those you are wanting to support.
