It is heart-warming to see the Crossways tamariki attending The Wellington Children’s Art Exhibition certificate ceremony, an empowering experience for the youngest members of our community.

Dear teachers

Thank you for the opportunity for our children to take part in the art exhibition, we attended the certificate ceremony today, and the girls were really proud to receive their certificates and prizes (cardboard cable car models), from the new Wellington mayor Tory Whanau, it was a fun new experience for them to see the speeches and clap for everyone to receive their certificates, and to see their art on the wall :) Alice

Mahi Toi
We are fortunate to have artist Rieko Woodford-Robinson spend time with the children, inspiring, encouraging and empowering tamariki to explore and express themselves with visual arts.

Crossways kaiako are deeply grateful for the ako approach (teaching and learning) that Rieko brings to children’s mahi toi experience, she brings materials and inspiration, however she leaves the creativity truly in each child’s hands and eyes.

Local artist Rieko Woodford-Robinson visited Crossways to inspire tamariki to create artwork for the 6th Wellington Children’s Art Exhibition which will be held at Wellington Museum from 7th to 20th November.

A group of Tamariki showed immediate interest in painting with Rieko and the fresh art tools she was putting on the table. Each tamariki received special paper and they had choices of felt-tip pens, water colour paint, or acrylic/tempera paint. Rieko came alongside and gave them encouragement and support.

Tamariki responded well and most of them spent a long-time producing masterpieces unique to each individual. This year’s exhibition theme is “What makes you unique”. I believe our young artists expressed their uniqueness by the ways they experimented and explored with idea and the visual art media that Rieko brought into the workshop.

Rieko was impressed by how long tamariki sustained their interest and how confident they were in their exploration. She said she was inspired by their freely trying ideas on the paper. I am proud of our tamariki and I am thankful to Rieko for the workshop – the time that released the children’s creativity to flow onto the paper.

Dave Linton managing director of Linton Construction and hands on Carpenter, came to repair the Crossways fence after a truck crashed into our gum tree, bringing it down and smashing a huge hole in the playground fence (No one hurt)

While working on the fence Dave noticed our rotting heritage Bay windowsill and the remedial work we were trying to do ourselves.
Dave has an interest in preserving Wellington's heritage buildings and asked if we would like him to fix the sill at no cost.

Dave started the work but quickly realised the rot was also in the external wall structure and so widened the brief to ensure the whole Bay window is structurally sound by replacing the rotten framing as well as the sills.

With the window structurally sound and safe Crossways will have a wider window of time to find the funds for the much-needed preservation of the Arts and crafts leadlight windows.

Builder Dave Linton was on a job to fix a community creche's fence, but found the lure of fixing the centre's heritage window panels irresistible.

Kia ora koutou, Crossways Whānau, We wanted to announce the retirement of Crossways volunteer Margaret Long, who has taught and nurtured our Crossways children from 2007 – 2022.

For 15 years, Margaret has gifted her time freely and generously to the children of Crossways, who have all benefitted greatly from her attention and kindness. She is now embarking on a well-deserved retirement, so with deep gratitude we want to gift Margaret something memorable to mark her decade and a half of service to the children of Crossways.

In true Margaret style, she has requested that this gift be one both her and the Crossways children can enjoy in their learning environment. We felt the most fitting tribute would be a new native garden to provide food and shelter for birds, another of her great loves. It will be named the Long Garden in her honour.

We hope you will contribute to this heartfelt gift to Margaret, as a way of thanking her for her thousands of hours of service to all the past and present children and families of Crossways.

Please write a message of thanks to Margaret with your gift, which we will include in a printed book for her to treasure.
