International Women's Day this Sunday, still tipping the scales is the unpaid work of women.......
Since Marilyn Waring's groundbreaking book 'Counting for Nothing' was published in 1988, we have known that women's unpaid work is not being accounted for in Aotearoa's measurement of economic value. Women's persistent inequitable division of labour in caregiving and family roles β briefly made visible by Waring's time-use survey β continues to mean that time spent on unpaid work is another scale we have yet to balance.
Even 15 minutes of domestic labour a day adds up to: 105 minutes a week, 450 minutes a month or 5,475 minutes a year β almost 4 days a year spent cooking or cleaning, or organizing.
The vast majority of domestic tasks are absorbed into the physical and mental loads women are expected to carry everyday. When we consider what a truly balanced future looks like for women, we must also consider the hours, weeks, and even years women lose to domestic labour.
