Noa‘ia ‘e mạuri gagaj ‘atakoa!
This week we celebrate Gasav Ne Fäeag Rotuạm Ta - Rotuma Language Week (10 - 16 May)!
This year the theme for Rotuman language week is:
“Ȧf'ȧk, putua, a'pumuạ'ȧk ma rak'ȧk 'os fäega ma 'os ag fak Rotuma, la se maoen 'e 'os tore” – "Treasure, nurture and teach our Rotuman language and culture so it may live on through generations."
The theme highlights the importance of collective responsibility — to cherish, nurture, and actively teach the Rotuman language and cultural practices.
When Pacific languages are heard, spoken and celebrated, Pacific communities thrive and when our Pacific communities thrive, Aotearoa is a better place for all of us. Use of Pacific languages is in decline, and many are in danger of being lost. However, Aotearoa New Zealand, as the home to one of the largest Pacific populations in the world, is well placed to reverse this trend and to support Pacific languages to thrive.
No matter where Rotuman people are in the world, Rotuman language and culture remain central to their identity and connection to their heritage.
