Another important job that got done on Saturday was creating some temporary storage for the two outboard motors from TS Taupo, which we are currently looking after while that Unit is in recess.
Our resident all-round handy guy, Alex Paterson, knocked together some custom brackets so that the engines could be mounted on either side of the kayak trailer. This will allow us to easily roll it outside and run up both engines on a regular basis, to keep them in good condition.
Not sure how fast the trailer will go now, but we may have created an entirely new form of transportation ! 🤣

Two boating days in a row with almost no wind in the forenoon - what are the odds ! However, it was a perfect time for the cadets to work on Pulling Crew and Pulling Charge Certificates. Then after lunch, a gentle southerly sea breeze kicked in across Ākau Tangi.

If you come from outside of Wellington you might think that it's always blowing at least half a gale in the capital ! However, the proof is in the photos and last Sunday it was more like "painted ships on a painted ocean" or even drifting on a millpond, until a gentle sea breeze kicked in later in the day.

Last weekend, Leading Cadet Teo Vere Jones participated in Exercise Kaitoke Endurance. This was a field activity hosted by Wellington City Cadet Unit (WELCCU) north of Upper Hutt.
The cadets were given a taste of living under canvas, and a number of other Army focused evolutions including sentry rosters, patrolling, casualty evacuation, and construction of helicopter landing zones. It was a big change of scene from boating but well received, and hopefully more of our cadets will get involved next year. Thanks to WELCCU for the invitation.

Over the weekend of 9 & 10 May, a number of our newer cadets took part in Exercise Bulls Eye - a fi****ms training weekend organised by No.2 (Hutt City) Squadron ATC.
Cadets from all three Corps across the Wellington region came together at Trentham Military Camp on the Saturday for lessons in fi****ms safety code, weapon handling and DFTTs. This was then put into action on Sunday with range practices hosted in Petone and Newtown.
Thanks heaps to FLTLT Townsend and FLTLT Costello, and all of the other NZCF Officers and SNCOs who made this happen. Amokura's cadets had an awesome time and several achieved very good results as a result of all the coaching they received.

It is with great sadness that we say good bye for now to one of our shipmates.
TS Amokura mourns the loss of LTCDR (later SQNLDR) Allen Douglas NZCF, who passed away suddenly on Thursday from a medical event.
A stalwart member of the Sea Cadet whanau for many years, Allen began as a cadet with TS Tutira in the 1990s, rose through the ranks, commissioned as an officer, and eventually took command. After the closure of TS Tutira he went on to assist and run multiple Units across the northern Wellington region. Over his career in the NZCF he staffed many courses and activities at local, regional and national level and gave of his kindness, patience and wisdom to innumerable cadets and officers. He leaves behind a great legacy of service and many fond memories.
LTCDR Stephen Worth - Allen was a great friend who was unfailingly good humored and managed to take everything in his stride, even when stuck up to his thighs in the mud at Foxton Beach !
LT Brittany Abels - He was always the smiling champ and a mentor of kindness to all of us. He included everyone and made you happy and proud to be part of the SCC and to have some like him on ya team. God bless you'll be missed.

Over the weekend of 17-19 April, nine Amokura cadets with ENS Stevens as Team Manager, travelled up to the Navy’s Tamaki Leadership Centre at Whangaparaoa, north of Auckland. There they contested the 2026 SCC National Regatta against TS Achilles (Auckland) representing the Northern Area, and TS Godley (Christchurch) from the Southern Area.
The National Regatta represents the pinnacle of Navy Cadet training, with the cadets competing in fourteen events that test nearly all aspects of our syllabus, both on and off the water. Unfortunately, the Hauraki Gulf did not escape the extreme weather which caused such chaos throughout the motu this month, forcing the planned schedule to be altered and some of the water-based events to be cancelled.
Nevertheless, the majority of the Regatta was completed and TS Amokura placed first in three events – Pulling, Crown Sailing and Mast Construction. Warrant Officer Cadet Prisha Patel achieved the highest score in the .22 target rifle competition taking out the prize for Top Shot, while Acting Leading Cadet Teo Vere-Jones won the Endeavour Award. Overall our team placed second behind TS Achilles, and they represented Amokura with awesome sportsmanship and camaraderie. A special shout out to our three Ordinary Cadets who really lived up to the Unit’s motto - ”Try Always” - as they have only a short time in the SCC under their belts.

Our final duty of the day was assisting the Department of Internal Affairs at the National Service of Commemoration held at Pukeahu NMWP. Cadets from TS Amokura and No.1 Squadron ATC provided ushers, assisted veterans with mobility issues and handed out the Order of Service to members of the public.
Warrant Officer Cadet Prisha Patel accompanied Mr Frazer Carlson to lay the wreath on behalf of the Arctic Convoy Club of NZ. A total of 85 merchant vessels and 16 British warships were sunk during the effort to deliver war supplies to northern Russian ports between 1941 and 1945, with the loss of more than 3,000 allied lives. Horrendous weather conditions in the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans added to the hazards of enemy action.
The 2025 NZCF Cadet of the Year, Cadet Flight Sergeant Bradan Foster of No.18 (Avon) Squadron ATC delivered a reading and laid the penultimate wreath on behalf of the Youth of Aotearoa, followed by RNZRSA National President Tony Hill on behalf of all Veterans.

Later in the morning, TS Amokura supported the Civic Wreath Laying at Wellington Cenotaph. Leading Cadets Felix Galloway and Rosie Buyck acted as the Wreath Attendants, while the Unit's poppy bedecked anchor was laid by Chief Petty Officer Cadet Rachael Worth and Lieutenant Commander Stephen Worth. This was one of more than 80 tributes laid by government, national and military representatives, service and veterans associations, community groups and local schools.

Officers and Cadets from TS Amokura began Anzac Day 2026 by marching in the Dawn Parade at Pukeahu National War Memorial Park. In line behind the VIPs, Veterans and serving RF personnel came formed contingents from 5/7 Battalion RNZIR Army Reserves, TS Amokura Navy Cadets, No.1 (City of Wellington) Squadron ATC and St John Youth cadets, filling ANZAC Square. Along with hundreds of members of the public we stood at dawn to honour the service and sacrifice of all those who have gone before.
