A q... q... (sorry can't use that word)... period with relatively few calls was interrupted this morning when a Second Alarm was transmitted at Mana College in Porirua.

Kilbirnie 2426 and a crew of our volunteer personnel attended in support of the HAZMAT response, covered by RNZ here https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/emergencies_local/1124916/mana-college-s-lockdown-lifted-after-chemical-incident ...
.. the event was also attended by career fire appliances from Porirua, Johnsonville, Thorndon (Aerial), Remutaka (BA Tender (looking suspiciously like our KILB2427 van... 🤔)), Wellington City (Command Unit) and Kilbirnie (Hazardous Materials Unit), and our fellow volunteers from Titahi Bay VFB.

A lockdown at Mana College in Porirua has lifted, with the principal telling media it was caused by the discovery of the same chemical which locked down another school earlier this week.

Last week our brigade held it's 127th Annual General Meeting.

The OIC presented his annual report and again thanked brigade members, whanau, and FENZ executive for their support after another successful year supporting FENZ operations in Wellington.

Particularly thanked were the outgoing members of our Management Committee, unsung heroes who keep the brigade ticking behind the scenes.

We voted in a new management committee - congratulations to QFF's Scott Maxim and Dylan Wahapa, FF Anita Frew and RFF Edan Wylie - and also appointed Milan Lukic to the role of Secretary (in addition to Treasurer).

At the conclusion of the evening supper was served, with thanks to the crew members who organised this behind-the-scenes as well. Looking forward to another good year!

We have a crew with KILB2426 at work supporting FENZ operations in Brooklyn.

Firefighters are battling a house fire in the Wellington suburb of Brooklyn.

At training this week, our team joined forces with Victoria Rescue - NZRT7 to help drain Capital Trout Centre's pond.

Using submersible and trash pumps, we safely lowered the water level while putting our equipment and teamwork into practice. Thanks to Vic Rescue and the Capital Trout Centre for the opportunity.

Our team were part of the FENZ response to this incident last night, which escalated to 3rd Alarm level. At the top of a hill and close to the end of a cul-de-sac, the road was congested by parked emergency vehicles and amongst our tasks was the management of the road closure at the end of the street, and helping move fire appliances around to enable crew changes and replacement appliances to come-and-go. We also provided our lighting equipment & supported post-fire decontamination activities, provided general support to the Incident Command Point and helped with making up equipment as the incident scaled down.
We were dispatched around 6pm and the crew didn't get back to station until around 11pm.
And this afternoon - another run out to Porirua station to uplift equipment that was left deployed overnight.
Great work team!

Residents say a fire which levelled one home and spread to a neighbouring property on Saturday night grew terrifyingly fast in high winds.

Quick catch up on recent Firecalls!

Since the beginning of April we've been dispatched to a total of 15 Incidents (and one of those, twice). That includes structure fires in Strathmore Park and Makara, Salvage calls (dealing with water ingress) several times across addresses in the CBD, Newtown and most recently - Wellington Airport.
The biggest and most recent call was of course the incident at the Airport this weekend, which received extensive media coverage (such as https://www.1news.co.nz/2026/06/12/multiple-fire-crews-respond-to-blaze-at-wellington-airport/ and later https://www.1news.co.nz/2026/06/13/wellington-airport-fire-believed-to-have-started-in-wall-cavity-wiring/ discussed the cause) and was ultimately escalated to 4th Alarm level.
Fire appliances from across Wellington either attended, or were redeployed to provide fire response cover.
As part of the greater-alarm response Wellington OSU provided support services in the form of Post-Fire Decontamination support, Firefighter Recommissioning (Hot and Cold drinks to support crew recovery) and helped with making up equipment. Our lighting kit was also deployed to support Firefighters attempting to make access to the fire and extinguish.
The following morning we were called back to help clean up a decent amount of water that'd made ingress into the terminal.

The airport's southwest pier and main terminal building were evacuated at around 7.15pm last night after a fire set off smoke alarms.
